    adsite

    Hi again,

I have a problem with pop ups that occur as soon as i launch ie (not every time) and randomly once ie is running.

The pop ups are headed "ads served by adsite".

I have completed scans with Norton, adware, spybot, spyware remover but none identify or cure the problem. I also have the google ie bar with pop up blocker which does not help

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this problem

    Re: adsite

Check under Tools -> Internet Options -> Manage Add-Ons and see if you've got anything there that seems to be connected.

Other thing to run is HijackThis and post the log here so we can see if there's anything untoward lurking in your registry.

    Hi and thanks for replying.

I checked in ie tools add ons and could only find "ad optimizer". I disabled it and will see if it helps when ie is started a few times. I couldn't identify anything else that could be a problem but i am no expert.

Below are the results of the scan by HijackThis

    Thanks again.

    C:\Windows\system32\SearchFilterHost.exe

That sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Unless theres a legitimate reason for it being there, I'd get rid of it.

    It's a legit file...
You might want to do a web search before telling someone to delete a Windows file.

    Sorry if I was misunderstood.

When I said 'get rid of it' I meant ending the process, but I can see how that would be mistaken. My bad.

Yes I probably should have searched on it before I reacted, but in 4(5?) years of running & administering XP Home & Pro installs I have yet to come across it. Well, that, and its not essential so not really needed.

I'll have another look through the list tomorrow when my head is clear and see if I can see anything that is out of the ordinary and would cause the problems you describe.

    Re: adsite

When you do a hijackthis log file upload it here. It will tell you what is good/bad.

    HijackThis Logfileauswertung

The thing that is causing you the trouble is definitely the ads_optimizer.

Open HijackThis. Hit None of the above (bottom option), Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

    O2 - BHO: ads_optimizer - {9C8A568E-4201-478a-8536-526CF371D2E2} - C:\Windows\system32\nsa5008.dll

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Then run a virus check in safe mode.

Read this for complete instructions - post #4. Oh and get rid of Norton, it's the devil incarnate and use something better.

    Re: adsite

    Hi iranu,

i have done everything you asked above. The scan in safe mode revealed no issues.
I have left the log file at the link and the majority is noted as "safe" or "identified as a good one"
    However several examples exist of each example below;

    [Y] O4 - Global Startup: STK016 PNP Monitor.lnk = ? - The entry is unnecessary and can be fixed.

    [Y] O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" - Not dangerous, but unnecessary.

[Y] C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE - Possibly nasty! According to our database this process runs normally in c:\programme\microsoft office\office11\! Check if you know this process and arrange a viruscheck where required. E-Mail Client für Windows
Do i need to do anything about these and if so what?

Noting what you said about "ads optimizer" i checked again in add ons and either it re-enabled itself or i didn't do it properly so i disabled it again. I have been runnung the laptop all day without any pop ups (i would expect at least a few) and each time i check add ons the item remans disabled. Should i now delete it?
Everything seems to be working okay.

Many thanks to all who posted.

Not to worry dave87 i always double check exactly what i am about to do before i do it so no doubt you or someone else would have pulled me up before i made the wrong move.
