I just tried installing these two bits of software (mainly for the virtual drives) but each time it kyboshed* my pc.

I can't imagine there are issues with KIS and Windows XP Pro SP2.

Is there any way to figure out what is going wrong? KIS really went loopy** after attempting to install these two bits of software (not both at once mind you).

All I want to do is have a virtual drive to run image files and keep my DVD drive free.

*kyboshed = ranged from hanging the pc, explorer crashing and eventually BSOD

**loopy = corrupt database through to failing to load

Daemon Tools Lite for mounting an image with something like Nero (most will have it lying around somewhere) to create it?

No idea what KIS is though.

Kaspersky Internet Suite? if so, i'd avoid that program like the plague... Killed my love for System Mechanic, it did.

Yep, KIS is Kasperky Internet Security.

I'd still like to know where to start in finding out what went wrong.

So checked out event viewer, looks like SPTD has an error. I was wondering why I couldn't install Daemon Tools Lite so checked out the event viewer.

So how do I recover the SPTD?

This is all it says in the event viewer:
