core 2duo or quad core ?

i already have a 3800+ x2 2 gb ram its ok , video encoding is not bad 20 mins in winavi or 1.30 hrs with avi2dvd

i have had a pb5 board sat here on my desk for a while ,
and was wondering wot would be the best cpu for monies to go into it ,
e4 or e6 or e8200, or quad, is
there a massive increase from dual to quad, ?
is there a big REAL world difference
wot would you say is the best BANG for buck in the dual and quad core cpus ?

Well thats true, i was going for a q6600(quad core) but i decided to go for a e6850(dual core)

Theyre pretty much the same performance wise for what i use my pc for anyway, iv used both cpu's with the exact same setup.

Unless you do alot of video editing then i recomment to go for a dual core processor.

But if video editing is what you mainly do on your computer, then go for quad core.

Basically, you can get a much better quality dual core for the price of a not so good quad core so...

The bottom rung Quad (Q6600) is as good, if not better than any E series C2D (except the xtreme versions).

And remember, the Q6600 can be had for well under £150 now.

Better Quality?

Agreed with Blitzen here, the Q6600 is a fantastic chip. Overclocks just as well as it's Dual core equivalent (E6660) and provides so much PC flexability especially to people want to encode video and go about there usual PC business. Sure there are plenty of new dual cores since the E6600 (E8200 etc..) but none of them are really worth the money compared to the quad, even when they can hit 4.0GHz and above, the q6600 can hit 3.8GHz with very good air cooling and that is over 2 more cores

Price drops on the Q6600 are next week I beleive (OCUK have jumped the gun) so you will find the Q6600 between £130 and £140.. can't agrue with that

true. not to mention it clocks fantastically, and more software will become mulithreaded as the time goes by.

it depends on budget, really, but IMO, if you can afford it, a Quad is the best option to go for... clocked to 3+ ghz you'll be hard pressed to fault it's gaming performance, unless you want to nitpick tbh. if not, get an E2160 or E2180 and clock it to 3ghz. i have a 2160 and am very pleased with it's performance. oh, and for the Q6600, i wouldn't buy if from OCUK - their price drop is not significant... just a notch off of Ebuyer's prices, and ebuyer hasn't dropped price yet

well tbh.. the way that games and applications and going you'd be better off getting a Q6600 after the price cuts.

most applications and games are now coded to be multi-threaded so you will notice a difference, but if you're never gonna need to use all that processing power you might be better off getting a C2D..

I am about to upgrade my rig and had decided ont he q6600 but you`ve just confirmed my thoughts.

The question now though is should I get the q6600 or would I be better getting aq9450. Is the extra 100 quid worth the performance boost?

Nope.
From what the benches suggest, the extra £100 is nowhere near worth it.

Yep can't see the point in getting the Q9450. The Q6600 is easier and safer to overclock for air cooling setups

The Q9450 doesnt clock anywhere near aswell.

Shame that as they couldve had a very good core on their hands.
