Eve & CoD4 MP crashed related to Overclock?

    Hi All,

I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me with some weirdness taht I'm experienceing with my pc.

I'm running a Q6600 and a 8800GT in windows Vista 64 (see sig for full spec) and having some problems with a couple of games when overclocked.

I easily overclocked my cpu to 3.2 with minimal voltage increases to NB, SB, Memory an Vcore and was happily running Oblivion, CoD 4 single player, Stalker and others for weeks, as well as over 24hrs of Prime95 and a looping 3DMark 06. So all was good I thought.

As the pc was up and running I retired my old pc to my wifes desk and started to use it for eve and CoD 4 Multiplayer (which I have only just discovered is bl00dy awsome), but I started to run into problems. I get errors on both of theses programmes and crash to desktop. I can't remember the errrors right now, I'll look them up at home later.

The Temps have never got above mid 50's in CoreTemp for 3 of the cores and 61 for one of them.

I then dropped down to a 3, then a 2.8 OC and still had the same problems with the 2 online games, but everything else is fine. I can pot the full details of my settings later if that helps.

Has anyone got any ideas what the prob is? And more importantly how to solve it. At the mo I have to decide what to play and either boot to default or and overclock which is becoming a bit of a pain.

    Regards
    Cam

play about with more settings, faster or slower may be stable but where your at now obviously doesnt work, along with the other settings you tried.

try everest ultimate edition and track the temps, it may be the southbridge overheating as they tend to have poor cooling solutions.

it could be bios related, it could be the divider. either way its a long road ahead, it took me ages to find a stable OC.

Probably drivers, if you see the error as being in the nvdisp.dll or similar then almost certainly.

But also try underclocking your 8800GT - use ntune for something simple.

I don't know if its the very most recent one, but I only downloaded it 4 weeks back or so from Major Geeks

Re: Eve & CoD4 MP crashed related to Overclock?

The thing is that I don't think that it is the stability of the system that is the problem as all non online games are rocksolid, and 24hrs of 3DMark and Prime 95 would dindicate it is fine as well.
My guess is that something to do woth the OC process is throwing the online programmes. I'd assume something to do with expected vs actual clock speed maybe? Or the Pcie bus (altogh I have set that to unlinked)

Eve error message was something to do with beig out of sync, and CoD4 mp plays alright for 15mins or so, and knows when i have got enough points for a enw weapon etc, and reports that in game, but my pc then doesn't think I've got the points.

Could an OC get something out of sync?

Even a 5% OC using the BIOS OC options causes the same probs with online games, while I can run it on a 40% OC fine with offline games.

Do quad cores suffer from the same timing errors that dual cores do? If so, try the MS dual core hotifix

Good question re the hotfix. A quick google brings nothing up, but I'll check windows update and the Intel website more thoroughly tonight.
