    No Display with 4GB RAM

Good very evening to you all.

I have recently rigged up a gaming machine with the sli graphics, quad core, vista 64 bit etc etc. However i have currently got 2gb of 800mhz DDRII SLI Ready Performance RAM running at 2.1v, due to my upgrade to vista 64 bit i decided to buy another 2gb of the same RAM. I put the RAM in and thier is no display from the monitor at all. i tried the RAM in different slots etc. and i made sure it wasnt faulty by just trying the 2GB of the new RAM. All was fine.

I then tried just putting in 3GB, this evidently worked.

I have come to the conclusion, that this will possibly be my Power Supply not being able to handle the full 4 sticks of RAM, or i need to up some kind of voltages in the bios.

It is however a 700watt performace power supply from Antec, and many of my friends have said this should run everything fine. If it is the power supply, i will go out tomorrow and buy a 1000 watt, but i dont want to spend 100 notes on something, if this issue can resolved another way. I.e. upping the voltage from the mobo maybe or something along them lines. Also when i overclocked my CPU my machine frequently was just shutting down without warning. upon checking the heat it was idling at around 38 degrees and topping 48 max under load. So it wasnt a heat problem. this again swayed me towards my power supply not having enough power for my machine.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated from anyone who has had this problem.

To sum up the above in plain text:

machine is turning on but not displaying output on monitor when i apply 4GB RAM

will work with 2 and 3GB of RAM

    Power supply is 700watt.

Frequent shutoffs when upping CPU voltage even though temperature was at 48 max under load.

Many Thanks guys, if you need any more info just give me a shout!

Re: No Display with 4GB RAM

Don't waste your money, its not the PSU... its more likely to be the motherboard that doesn't like 4 sticks...

Overclocking does cause instability if not done properly so that's an independent problem...

Some nforce boards will only run 4GB at 667mhz, try lowering the speed to that and sticking all 4 sticks in.

My Quad-GT won't POST with 4gig without a raise in the northbridge voltage. Give it a try

This is definately true of the 680i chipset unfortunately, so you're gonna have to scale back your RAM speed to get the benefit of 4Gb. On the plus side, this'll have no serious effect on your performance as having 4GB available is a lot more beneficial than using 2Gb at 800Mhz.

Re: No Display with 4GB RAM

Also, dont forget to boot into windows with 2gb installed and install the following patch to Vista 64bit.
Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that uses more than 3 GB of RAM: "STOP 0x0000000A"

Its not related to your problems above, but definitely an update worth having installed to prevent any future issues.

Re: No Display with 4GB RAM

You guys are fantastic, many thanks for your help.

Didnt have a clue where the northbridge was in the bios to increase the voltage so i downed the 800mhz to 667 and installed all 4gb of the DDR2 memory, have not seen no performance decrease at all!

i have also overclocked the cpu to 3.0ghz per core and it seems stable.

funnily enough S_kinton i had this stop error about an hour ago.

    I will update.

    Thanks for all your support!
