    Should i update my bios

    Hello,
I have got myself a Asus P5Q Pro motherboard, the bios revision currently is 0506,

however when i go onto the asus support website there are 2 additional bios upgrades available.

I normally update my bios using the asus update tool on windows, however it does not seem to find any

    new updates for the board.

    The newest update is 1104

    Any advise?

usually it's recommended to flash the BIOS only if you are having a problem with a known fix in the new BIOS i.e. if it isn't broken don't fix it ...

Look at what the new bioses do that one you have doesn't - often it is justy support for later processors. Given that flashing the BIOS is probably one of the riskiest things you can do to your mobo, follow Buff's advice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

But in spite of that - if you do decide to reflash it, do NOT do it from within Windows! That is an almost sure fire way of bricking the mobo.

I've flashed more mobos than I can count within Windows without an issue. Granted, its far more reliable flashing from a command line, but I wouldn't go as far as to say its a sure way to brick it

Unless there is an issue with ASUS boards?

As the guys have said flash if it will fix and issue like the classic blue screens with all dimms populated.

Never ever flash your bios if your system is unstable, if you have a crash during flashing, your FED , unless you have the latest dual CMOS.

Try not to flash from windows though i have done and it works but once again its something else that could go wrong and corrupt the flash.

Your MB forums are usually a good place for advice if you are having difficulties in flashing or with the board on a whole.

Asus boards seem to be particularly problematic - or perhaps it is more accurate to say that the Asus Windows flashing application has history of problems (I think Asus recommend that it isn't used). (And I dis say 'almost' - there will always be someone who has done it! ) But I always use the Dos based tool, or EZ flash - and then with the computer connected to a UPS. (The mains supply can be a little tricky here)

Re: Should i update my bios

I have flashed my Asus mobo from Windows a few times and it has all gone ok but it is a bit risky so generally i wouldn't recommend it, particulary given that Asus themselves don't encourage it!

Heh, being that its made by ASUS I guess I should have expected it really
