Corsair HX520 and HD 4870 screens don't switch on

    Hi there,

So i've just put the system in my user details together, using the hx520 from an older build.

For the first few boots I managed to get both screens working fine and installed windows. On subsequent boots, the 24" screen did not switch on but i thought it down to a driver problem, and updated my Catalyst drivers. Upon restart, now both screens did not power on boot.

So i opened the case and booted the system again. The red lights on the other side of board to the power connectors flash on when powering up. The fan on the GPU spins too. And I know that the computer is actually booting into Windows as I can hear the "vista jingle".

So I found this thread http://forums.hexus.net/psus/146046-...wont-post.html which is exactly the problem i'm having now. So my question is can I RMA the PSU due to this? (It used to work in my old system fine, but that drew less wattage) I know people have powered their 4870 fine on a HX520. Or is this not a bad PSU but an overworked one?

Or is my 4870 a dud?

Thanks in advance for the help!

try the 4870 in another system if you can. Maybe you could be overloading 1 rail iirc the Corsair PSU's are split into rails. Put everything else on a seperate rail to the GPU and try booting.

I would if i could. Unfortunately can't get hold of a PSU that's beefier than the current one I have. The rest would be definitely underpowered.

    Doesn't need to be beefy

You probably don't even use more than 350w, maybe less! You'd be suprised if you checked with a meter. If it's the system in your my system you're not using as much power as me. What other PSU's have you got?

Hmm but would the 350W include the efficiency of the PSU? I could try it out with a 420w PSU. Will have to go dig that out and try it out then.

the 350w does include the efficiency of the psu, so it's probably pulling even less! mind you though I forgot but I'll mention now, don't try it with a cheap psu or non branded as it may pop and destroy all your expensive parts. If thats the case then you should try shifting the molex cables onto different rails and try booting.

that is a scary thought. Definitely wouldn't want that happening. Will try removing and shifting stuff as much as possible first then. Thanks for the help!

I doubt your PSU would not be able to handle your spec. Corsair are superb. Think you are going to have to check things, one by one.

All corsair PSUs only have 1 rail, even the HX520/620, while listed as 3 rails are actually 1 rail PSUs with 40A on the HX520.

Exception is the HX1000 with 2 true rails.

Re: Corsair HX520 and HD 4870 screens don't switch on

So after hrs of plugging in and unplugging stuff, I have discovered that I probably have this problem.

    http://forums.amd.com/game/messagevi...VIEWTMP=Linear

I used to use these monitors on an Nvidia system.

So essentially it kinda works if I use VGA cables, but i want my dvi sharpness! And I couldn't get any of their workarounds to work, although I have to admit i don't fully understand how the problem comes about, as there seems to be two camps:

    1. Losing monitor after vista drivers kick in
    2. Never having monitor display anything from boot

And the blame seems to be on a combination of NVidia, ATi and the monitors EDID.

Anyone know a solution to this problem or is able to explain how the problem comes about better?

    Cheers
