    Irql_not_less_or_equal

I am hoping someone will be able to help.

I am running XP with all updates on a P4 2.8ghz with 1gig ram. The system runs with out issue until I go into documents & settings/Martin when I get a BSOD - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. It happens whenever I try to access the above folder. Access to other folders is not an issue. Any ideas?

chkdsk /r is your friend. Run that, let it complete and post the results.

Just tried starting in Safe Mode and I am able to access folder, I assume this indicates its a driver issue?

Ok - and you still have the restart problem when you access the folder in regular Windows?

    Re: Irql_not_less_or_equal

I guess there is some problem with:
    1. Your graphics driver
    2. DirectX

If it works in safe-mode I guess its related to that.

Document&Settings tends to have media files like AVI / WMV that Windows will attempt to read. I've had similar problem about 7 yrs ago with Windows 2000 with broken DirectX causing it to crash.

Doesn't disabling media preview fix that? If so you can do

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

from a command prompt to disable media preview and see if that stops the crashing - if it does that you're probably looking at DX, your display driver (as Arthur said) or a bum codec that's been installed.

To re-enable media preview you can do

    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

so you won't do any permanent damage by trying it
