    Overclocking issues

hi, im kinda new and was looking for help in OCing my processor

ive read a couple of guides from here and had no luck

my processor is an E4600 2.4GHz Dual core 2
motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLi
    memory by Crucial

everytime i try windows crashes upon login or it'll BSOD

if i take the fsb up by a single MHZ, windows *WILL* crash, if taken above 210mhz, windows will BSOD

any help would be fantastic ^.^

    Re: Overclocking issues

Overclocking isn't a dark art, but at the same time you need to know what you're doing. A lot of people post similar requests and basically the answer will always be check the guides to overclocking.

The reason for this? All components are different, as such you need to consider what ya got and what's likely, in terms of increase, before you set out. Some components just don't like extra voltage.

Post your systems spec including voltages and you may get some help. As a rule of thumb, set the RAM manually, both voltages and speed, as this is the most likely cause of BSOD. Then make a note of your Voltages, that's your starting point! Then try upping the FSB by 1.....

    Good luck!

    Re: Overclocking issues

Right fella, first step is to set the RAM manually so that it's taken out of play at the beginning. Then you tweek the FSB on the processor and ensure that the RAM speed is kept below the limit by reducing the RAM multiplier in the BIOS.

What speed RAM do you have?

    Re: Overclocking issues

I may be able to help you a bit here, just this week I was overclocking a friend's c2d e4400 with the same board as yours and cooled using a TRUE Black. First thing we did was flash the BIOS to 0608 version, recommened as the best overclocking bios. Then we set the Northbridge voltage to 1.56V in the bios ( we also reseated the northbridge using arctic silver) and dropped the CPU multiplier down to minimum and link/synced the RAM with the FSB(also dropped the memory command rate down to 2T). This eliminated the cpu and RAM being limiting factors (as the RAM was rated at 400MHz). We were able to increase the fsb up to 390Mhz (1560MHz quad pumped). However, we encountered several FSB holes while testing(e.g. we could run it at 333MHz but not 300Mhz), you may have run into one of these holes at 210MHz, try jumping over it. With the FSB and RAM limits known, we slowly increased the CPU multiplier, adding extra volts when required (wouldn't load windows, run Prime 95 stable).

We encountered serious Vdroop ( drop in CPU voltage under load), as much as 0.1V. Using a pencil mod (search google for p5n-e overclocking) to reduce this problem. We got our vdroop down to less than (0.01V) this improved the overclocking headroom significantly( the max safe voltage of the chip is 1.5V).

Furthermore, we encountered serious disparity between BIOS set voltage and actual CPU voltage shown in CPUZ and other monitors. I recommend relying on CPUZ for the actual vcore if your have a similar problem.

Using this method we got the chip up to 3.5 Ghz (2.0Ghz stock) FSB 388MHZ (1555MHz quad pumped). This was limited by the chip not the motherboard. With the superior e4600 you can likely expect to hit a better top overclock. That said we used serious air cooling (Thermalright TRUE black, + 2 x 1600rpm scythe fans), you may need such cooling to keep your temps under control.

    Hope this is of use

    Re: Overclocking issues

my P5N-E sli always vdroops a tonne, i also found that cpuz claims it overvolts... I am trying to see if i can find the fsb holes in my E5200, i want to max out the fsb on it.

    Re: Overclocking issues

The vdroop is very concerning, but the pencil mod is VERY easy to apply (took all of 5 minutes). I would send u a link straight there but i can't till i hit 5 posts.

    Re: Overclocking issues

ive checked that guide out, looks promising but the vcore has destabilized

looking at speedfan, the voltage spikes at 1.31v and drops to 1.24750v

does anyone know the power points on the board to use a volt meter to measure the current?
