    broken power switch

    Hi,

Would really appreciate your help here.

This is probably obvious to most of you but a friend's power switch is knackered and I've been tasked to fix it.

As you can see in the photo, the wires have come out of the button/switch thing. When I touch the blue and white cables, the PC powers on fine thank god. The button also makes the correct clicking noise when pressed.

The two black things are rubber tubes which held the wires. I know which way round the wires are meant to go because I checked on another PC, but if I simply shove the wires into the tubing and press the button, nothing happens.

Do I have to do anything special to get the correct contact going?
Is it easier just to get a new button/switch (whatever they're called)?
Would this include the blue/white wires?

One of the side brackets on the switch is a bit loose and liable to snap so I would prefer to replace the thing TBH. If someone could point me towards the part I need that would be helpful.

    thanks

Piccy is a tad big - nice close up of the carpet weave!

Any momenary contact (technically non-latching) push button will do - more important in this instance is that it will physically fit your case.

Have a look at http://www.maplin.com - large range - or http://rswww.com (huge range - mainly professional so better quality - but more expensive, and you will have to be vert specific in your search terms)

Edit - just looked at the Maplin site

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?...ch&menul1=1650

might do the job. If you have a Maplin near you, pop in and have a look - if not - £3.00 won't break the bank.

oops sorry, I've cropped it now

thanks, I'll pop into Maplin and see what they've got. That link you sent - reset switch kit - is it designed to replace the reset button rather than the main power button, or is that not what it means? In other words, will it still power off a crashed PC if you hold it in for 5 secs, rather than immediately reboot?

    Re: broken power switch

The maplins reset switch sounds like the thing you need. It's the motherboard that works out what to do ie power down if held for 5 seconds, or do a soft reset if released before 5 seconds.

Take your switch with you, thay should be able to find the replacement you need.

edit: nice picture btw, is that a shard of glass I can see

take the plastic heatshrink off and solder the wires back on, it doesnt matter what way round you solder them as all your doing is closing the circuit

ah, so it needs soldering. my mate can do that. however I need to replace the plastic bit because one of the clips that holds it into the PC's case is damaged and won't do its job. If Maplin don't have what I need I might have to get creative
