Hi at the mo running a am2 proc on a gigabyte ma78gm-s2h rev 2xx but want to go am3 as some decent priced ones at the mo,support page says it does support am3 proc but will i need bios download etc thanks.

First you'll want to check what BIOS version you have atm, so download & run SIW (standalone). In the left panel choose BIOS under Hardware.
If the present version is FA, you may as well update it to FC, which is the latest.
BIOS update instructions with screenshots - best to use the Q-Flash method. All the best with it
The most important things to do whilst carrying out a BIOS update:
1. Follow the instructions exactly
2. Best to do it via the motherboard's own BIOS utility (Q-Flash in this case), or in DOS - i.e. not via the Windows' utility
3. Download the correct BIOS file for your board & extract the file (if it's a zipped one)
4. Use good, undamaged media: floppy, CD, flash drive as the case may be
5. Do not interrupt the updating process until it completes - i.e. do not press any keys, reboot or shutdown the PC
