Just take a copy from your backup.

But if you can't find your backups, you might want to look at www.runtime.org However the success (or otherwise) will depend on the nature of the disk problem. If it is 'only' corruption of the filesystem, these tools may help. If it is a hardware or mechanical failure of the disk, they are unlikely to be of much use.

It really depends on what you are talking about here... if the disk powers on but you get a boot failure then it may just be a currupt file system and you can just hook it upto another computer to recover your files.
If it is more serious i.e. does not power on then no amount of software is going to fix it.
Maybe if you explain in more detail the failure someone with have the exact solution for you.
cheers guys.
it powers on and is detected but i think the mbr might be wrecked. it's got bad sectors. i'll have a look at that site
cheers
oh, and it was my mums laptop and she has no backups
To be honest I've tried dozens of the "hard drive data recovery" type programs over the years and more often than not they won't find the things you want them to. I'm sure some of the forensic hardware utility-type stuff the big data recovery companies use can, but most of the software only ones are pretty rubbish.
Always worth checking the site of your hard drive's manufacturer though - they will often have a utility which can do the simple stuff like fixing the MBR, etc for you and if you use their own tool it'll usually preserve your warranty also.

I've used EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard in work a few times and it's done a decent job with drives suffering from corrupt OS installs, bad sectors etc. It did cost but not a great deal compared to lost data.
I've found that serious mechanical defects rarely allow most products I've come across to save anything useful.
This might help you:
