It's not the case i have no desktop or taskbar I have nothing but wallpaper and the recycle bin on it and the toolbar has no icons either.

I'm feeling that it's all gone and I will have to find a good recovery programme

Re: Symantec antivirus removal tool messed up system

All the programmes are intact but I have no icons shortcuts and folders on the desktop. (who leaves folders of important info on the desktop anyway!)
I have no downloads or picture folders. This applies to only one user the other user is OK.
I can not get anything back on the toolbar.

looks like I'm in the brown stuff.

so if you log on with other users its ok?

Is there stuff there when you browse the C: drive? If so copy it to a folder, kill the users profile folder on the PC then let it recreate it. Once this is done log in and copy the docs back.

can you not log in as one of the other users and do a system restore?

If you can't system restore that way then oress F8 on boot up to get to the safe mode menu and select the repair option. Once in the repair utility select system restore.

Re: Symantec antivirus removal tool messed up system

Thanks guys for your help but system restore was turned off by the user. Good idea to create a new account but it's just not worth it as i still can not remove the antivirus and that was all I wanted to do.
I have spoken to them and they are happy that i restore to factory settings...lol what joy!!

I'd try running ComboFix http://www.combofix.org/ & SDFix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/sdfix.php Both these do some extensive desktop cleanup routines.
