    Question Overclocking NooB needs help

OK guys, after cristmas I'm going to order the parts for my new build. So I'm finaly going to jump into the world of overclocking on my cirrent rig.

If anyone can tell me if i will get much of a cpu & gfx overclock with my current set up

    my current hardware is

    C2D e6750 with an akasa ak-965 cooler http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?t...l&model=AK-965
    MSI p35 neo 1 mobo http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=pro...0&prod_no=1215
    4gb DDR2 800 Corsair XMS2
    Saphire ATI Radion 4850 512
    Arctic Power 700W PSU
    i have a 120mm bottom intake and a 120mm exhaust.

I know my mobo isnt a very high end 1 so im unsure of the over clocking capablities. Wouldnt mind getting a bit more grunt out of my gfx card aswell.

    thanks hexus peeps

    Re: Overclocking NooB needs help

You should get at least another 20% out of the CPU.
You may want a better cooler though.

Well graphics card overclocking is nothing to do with the motherboard so it's down to whether you got lucky with a good sample or a not so good one.

The P35 motherboard is good enough to overclock nicely so you shouldn't have any problems apart from maybe with temperatures as I tested a E6400 OC'ed to 3ghz and it was already something like 40 idle and 60 load with Akasa 965.

Thanks for the info are there any coolers you guys recommend?

I don’t mind what kind of cooler, if its push pin or back plate I could do with tearing down my system and giving it a good clean and the need to fit a back plate would be a good reason to motivate my self.

You don't need to change the CPU heatsink, maybe on the graphics card depending on how far you want to go and temperatures..

    Re: Overclocking NooB needs help

Obviously that depends on how far of an overclock you can get haha.

By the way, you don't have to get any new coolers IF the current coolers can handle the overclock. Getting a better cooler does not mean better overclocks unless your cooler couldn't handle the heat provided by a the overclock.

e.g. say your cheap can be pushed to 3ghz but with the stock cooler the temp on load gets too high and therefore the overclock is deemed unstable and maybe even just end up restarting when stress testing, however with a better cooler the temp on load is a nice temperature and therefore the overclock will be perfect and will be stable through stress tests.

Just make sure you keep an eye out for temperatures at all times when you're stress testing an overclock.

thats the gfx card I have http://www.sapphiretech.com/presenta...000101&pid=220

will do i have speed fan installed is that still my best bet to use for cpu temp monitoring or should I use somthing else?

I understand ATIs overclocking utility will monitor my gfx card temps. is it any good?

    Re: Overclocking NooB needs help

For graphics card, I like to stick with GPU-Z to just check the temperature whilst using Furmark to stress test it and see what the max temp is.

I was never really a fan of stuff like Everest and speedfan but it's personal choice for everyone anyway either.
