Diagnosis my PC problem [Power boom failure]

    Hi guys,

Recently made a thread earlier about ordering a new PC because my current one (seemingly) has failed. But it seems such a shame to just abandon the system without diagnosis as it has been with me for a good 5 years.

    Age of system: ~5 years

    MOBO: MSI K7N2
    CPU: XP2800+ TB
    RAM: 2 * 512MB
    HD: 250 MAXTOR IDE
    GPU: 5900XT
    PSU: Channel Well Technology 450W

Problem: No power at all upon pressing power switch. PSU FAILURE?

Last act before failure: System was idle with mozilla on, maybe youtube but nothing else was on then it decided to turn itself off and that was the end of that.

Symptoms before failure: Around 2 maybe 3 weeks before the above happening, I noticed unstability with the system but didn't act on it. The system had random freezes whereby nothing moves combine with distorting noise coming from the speaker and the only way to reboot the system was to press the manual reset switch on the PC case. This happened frequently during the last few days before failure and happened most whilst streamining video from youtube.

My diagnosis: Removed all non essential components attached to the MOBO such as all IDE drives and left only the PSU, CPU, GPU and RAM. But power fails to come on, no lights no nothing.

    My assumptions:
    1. PSU has died
    2. MOBO has died
    3. PSU died and cause MOBO to die too...

Post problems attached with this failure: My ADSL speedtouch 330 USB had stopped working after the PC "blew up" whilst attached to it. I tried installing the modem to the Laptop I'm currently using but to no avail. The software/driver installed correctly as indicated by the "software light" on the adsl modem but the modem no longer detected ADSL signal from my landline. Further testing on my friends PC produced same result and currently using a router to go on the net indicates no problems with ISP/Phone line.

    My questions:
    1. Which one of my assumptions above is most likely?
    2. Would any components have failed as a result of this incident such as RAM, GPU, HD etc, which were all attached to the PC
    3. Worth the effort to repair? I'd like to simply cos it would be a waste to just get rid, would be good to give it to my mum to use or something...especially if the components such as the gpu, ram ain't dead!

    Thanks in advance.!

    LT

As commented on a similar post, are you getting any POST beeps?

The fact that you have removed items but the PC is still unresponsive would suggest a severe problem and the added clue that the ADSL modem suffered too does indicate a possible power issue.

Are you able to test any of the components (e.g. hard drive) in another machine? This would help you decide whether it is worth recovering/re-using?
