    Acer 5100 Notebook

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook, Had this since 2007 with no problems but have now lost the DVD drive which is not showing in the bios. Have read lots of posts on the internet and would appear this is a comon problem with this model due to a faulty southbridge chip where there are some dry solder joints. Has anyone had this problem? and is it repairable without renewing the motherboard.
I look forward to your response.

    Thanks ruppertthebear.

Hmmm, I wouldn't advise having a go at this unless you have a very good soldering iron, a jig setup and a very steady hand. How much do you use the drive? Just getting an external one for when you need it could work out cheaper and easier than trying to get the motherboard fixed (which would probably just be a replacement).
