display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

"display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7"

I keep getting this every 5 - 10 mins playing Mass effect 2, this has just started happening over the last few days. I've updated my ccc to 10.1, no effect, tried going back to 9.12 and even 9.11 and still nothing. Tried system restore again nothing. Its driving me nuts cause I like this game.

I have alt/tab'd out of the game when its been running to check the ccc temp and my cards running at 56/57.

I must add this is only happening on ME2, MW2 plays fine up full, Crysis again up full and no prob's.

Check to see if there are any patches available for the game.

Edit: Found one here, try this if you don't already have it installed: http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/08/...t-v1-02-patch/

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

This is probably going to sound very strange but it could be the RAM... I had identical issues (HD4870) and went round the twist trying to fix it. I did exactly what you've tried and also been back and forth with AMD/ATI support.

After trying everything else, I tried some older RAM and that did the trick.

Here's the thread I started: http://forums.hexus.net/help-technic...sods-argh.html. Corsair RMA'd the RAM but the replacements did the same - I guess the EP45-UD3P, or at least mine, don't like the type of RAM. 2GB 1066MHz Kingston HyperX T1s work a treat.

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

I wouldn't of thought RAM would give you Display Driver problems BSOD yes But wouldn't of thought display prob's, But will check with a mate as I'm sure he's got spare RAM. Its weird its just the one game though pc runs fine other wise. But again cheers for the reply.

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

It wouldn't be my first thought either because other games are working fine but there is a chance it's that. My first guess at what's wrong would be the game itself which is why I suggested a patch. Do you know anyone else with the game or even better with similar hardware too?

Have the same issue as you, win7, 10.1, horizon mission, with a hd4870, I found that the led D601 on the card is red seems a core power problem. I tried using another new power supply but doesn't solve it, the voltages on the bios seem fine, other games that don't use so much the GPU like wow works fine but I had before some freezes in wow for 5min then nothing more happens till I turn the pc off. My suspicious goes to the ati card since I change pci-e slots and the led keeps turning on.
It's still on warranty but I have to wait 30days... to get a new one if they find this as problems.
So my next step is getting the card to warranty and then get a new one for the time beeing.

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

When I spoke with ATI/AMD they reckon the video drivers are the 'fall guy' for other hardware issues - I didn't believe it either (and gave up struggling to understand) but I'm still on the same HD4870 with the same Win7 install and the same drivers but with different RAM and the problem(s) went away instantly.

The bizarre bit, which I don't pretend to have my head around is it wasn't really reproducible. Different points in games, even different games, etc. The other thing I found was that the dodgy RAM passed, with zero errors, 12-13hrs of Memtest. It also works absolutely fine and is solid as a rock in a different machine.

If you can get hold of some spare RAM from somewhere, try it - at the very least, it can't hurt.

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

AMD/ATI have asked me to run a Dxdiag and send em the report along with a Belarc report so will see what they say.

With checking the prob on the net seem's its not just Ati card's but Nvidia too and with so manyhaving prob's hopefully bioware should make a patch soon.

    Been there, done that.

I did, however, refuse to send an unedited Belarc report as it shows the key for Windows and Office... I've no idea who is on the other end!

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

got vista 64 bit, radeon 4870, mass effect 2, and the same damn problem as you guys. a few minutes into it and bam, screen goes black, i alt-tab out to see that display driver has stopped responding and has recovered. this of course makes the first cutscene even unwatchable (ive also seen it about 1,000 times now... "Shepard did everything right blah blah blah")

ram has been tested is fine, uninstalled ccc, reinstalled, uninstalled again, installed driver only, uninstalled driver, reinstalled ccc and driver again, tried every combo of configurations from ccc and mass effect 2 configuration menu in both windowed and full screen mode, plus bioshock runs fine, so i think it's the game.

waiting for a fix. till then, ive wasted 42 dollars.

Yeah it looks like it's a bug in the game then, how could they miss something like this? Developers really are getting lazy, knowing they can release patches later. If you pay for a game you want it to work straight away don't you? There's no excuse for improper testing/releasing with obvious bugs etc...

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

Well at last they released a fix for mass effect 2.

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...Crossfire.aspx

    And ccc 10.2 is out

    http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Also recieved a reply from amd support listing what i should do and to use some third party driver cleaner ( "Please note that this is a third party utility and has no affiliation with AMD") yer that instills a lot confidence lol.
But I have replied asking if they actually read my e-mail, Because everything they asked me to do I had already done and had said so in the first ticket I had sent them.

I should add I've installed both the above fix and 10.2 and had no-problems.

    Cheers Duffer

Re: display driver stopped responding and has recovered windows 7

well im trying a patch for mass effect 2 posted on the 22 of feb, which you will have to google because i cannot post a link, which is kind of inconvenient.

it's called the mass effect 2 patch 1.01.

if i dont come back and rage all over this topic, please assume i am playing the game successfully.

patch did not fix the problem. so...much...rage...
