    USB Problems

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of anything like this before.

I have an External powered USB drive, and its plugged into a main USB port (2) on the back of my PC.

Works fine for a couple of hours, and then it just vanishes, blam! its gone.

Wont work again, not even on a power down and re-boot.

Only reappears once the pc is off, and then the whole power at the wall switched off and back on.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

    Re: USB Problems

I had exactly the same problem with my iomega 1 TB external drive. Whilst the thing was under warranty I didn't want to have to return it just for that so I decided the best thing to do was to crack the enclosure open and took the hard drive out and put it in my PC.

I put another drive in the enclosure and it happened with that on closer inspection it was the USB controller in the enclosure thats at fault. The controller chip was getting far too hot causing the drive to cut out I suspect you've got the same issue.

I'd crack the enclosure open and take the drive out and see what happens.

    Re: USB Problems

Do other usb devices work on the same port after your Caddy has failed? Or indeed on any other USB ports?
Sounds like it might be mobo safety feature to prevent the bus from getting fried, hence the comeback after full power-off.
