Cool and quiet does not work

    Hi all,

Somehow the cool and quiet feature does not work on my system atm and I wonder if any of you have any idea what could be wrong....

the mainboard is a Gigabyte MA790X-UDP3 and the CPU is a Phenom 2 940 running at 3.8Ghz

I have cnq enabled in the bios, and I have been looking for other relevant options without any luck

I had a mobo with a 780G chipset before and CnQ worked just fine even if the CPU was OC'd...

    Any help would be appreciated....

ps: I have checked the power options in windows 7 and the relevant settings are missing too. with the previous motherboard I could set up the percentage for the clock speed when idle...

    im kinda clueless about this

Re: Cool and quiet does not work

What indicates it isn't working? Is the system definitely idle?
Look on the motherboard MFR's website to see if there are any BIOS updates.

Re: Cool and quiet does not work

Should just be CnQ ticked; not sure if there any other options.....

You've probably tried it at stock to make sure it does still work. CPUz should show the downclocked CPU; Pretty sure windows 7 does not allow me to choose the speed on my 770 chipset. I'll check if I get time.

Re: Cool and quiet does not work

    thanks for the replies.

I have checked in CPU-Z and the CPU does not clock down...and yes it's definitely in idle state...

I had 3 clocks 800, 1250, and the maximum clock of 3800 normally, but it's just stuck on 3800....the task manager shows no activity (cpu usage between 0-4%)

in the windows 7 power settings I could select the power states before (in percentages if I remember correctly)....but the whole option is missing from the list now

I'm heading towards gigabyte's site now

    thanks again

Re: Cool and quiet does not work

Sounds like 2 possibilities to me:

    1) a driver issue - if Win 7 isn't giving you the option it sounds like it doesn't know that the motherboard can handle the reduced power states.

    2) CnQ (and possibly other options) disabled in BIOS. Check your motherboard doesn't automatically disable power saving options when overclocking, or that some bizarre set of defaults isn't disabling it all....

I had the same problem with an Asus board, Found out that in Display Properties - Screen Saver - Power - Power Schemes I had to choose Minimal Power Management and then it worked. (XP Pro).

Similar to the above, on Vista, I had to set it to 'Balanced' rather than 'High Performance'. It was like the OS would ignore all the options, even though they were the same across all 3 plans. Like it was said before, use CPU-Z and you should be able to see if it throttles back and forth.

    Thanks for the above.

I have already tried this (and the others) without success

also, I have tried at stock speeds and it's ok...however if I change the multipiler then it stops...I just contacted Gigabyte and waiting for the response. I really hope it's not a gigabyte specific issue but a missed setting in the bios or an other minor thing.

Re: Cool and quiet does not work

I've got the following response from gigabyte

    Hi,

Under Gigabyte rules, Cool and quiet is disable once you adjust the cpu multipliers under bios.

For the reason that user decided to fixed the CPU multiplier for their requirement.

If you want Cool and quiet to work under the condition of change cpu multiplier, you can use our Easy Tune software to adjust cpu multiplier (not through bios).

The cool and quiet can work under this condition.
