Going to Win 7 64 bit, updated of BIOS needed?

    Evening all...

Final upgrade coming, when Scan get them to me. S775 board so its a Q8400 and decent case, psu etc.

Am about to go to Win 7 64 bit when the new bits have settled in. Board is an Asus P5QL/EPU.

Looking on the Asus site, http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID...itJ&templete=2, I see they have a few BIOS updates listed for the board for Win 7 as an o/s. On XP at he moment, home 32 bit. Can't tell if they are important or not. And I don't want to flash the BIOS if I don't have to, even though my board says its easy to with a USB.

Anyone offer an opinion for me?

    Thanks.

Well, note that the BIOS updates are listed no matter what OS you select - they're not Win7 specific. Select Windows XP and you'll see exactly the same BIOS updates listed.

As per usual the BIOS changelogs are pretty useless, but from what I can gather, the most recent one is an update to ExpressGate which is their "instant-on" feature you can use to avoid booting into the full OS - obviously irrelevant for Win7 64bit
And the one before that was an update to "LAN Option ROM" which generally means network booting stuff. If you don't do that (guessing you won't if you're installing Win7 from a DVD) then you don't have to worry about that either.

Pretty sure you can get away without bothering with either of those updates.

Nice one Caesium. I see you are right. Note to self ...check them all next time. It will indeed be an OEM copy from Scan.

Off topic, I see you have some NAS. Mind telling me how you use that? I am a muso and use my pc for recording so I get some phat old files. I have been looking at other options now I can build a second pc using my old bits. Am looking forward to getting the benefits of a quad core using SONAR and Reason.

There's an entire thread going on about the HP Microserver on this board somewhere if you're interested, they're a bargain right now - £220 or so and you get £100 cashback via cheque if you buy before 31st January.

As to using it, I just have Ubuntu 10.10 on it, and I've set up samba for windows shares, netatalk/afpd for mac shares, and nfs serving for linux shares. Going by the other thread about them they happily run Windows Server too though if thats more your thing
It pushes over 50MB/s over my GigE network so I'm reasonably happy with it for the price!

Thanks for that, appreciated. Some different ideas for me there.
