Blurry BIOS and everything else (replacing previous thread)

Something very weird is going on with my graphics card (again!)

When it boots up the bios is blurry, it can't produce the correct resolution of 1440*900 which it usually does fine. Then loading windows 7 it produces no graphic just the green bar, and in windows it can not select the correct resolution and does not detect my monitor.

    Last night it was fine.

I've tried another card and it doesn't seem to boot at all. it beeps but nothing on screen so I have no idea if it's related at all. I've reset the bios with the battery and no luck. It can run 3d fine, it runs furmark at normal speeds so i'm completely confused.
I'm wondering if it's just not booting properly somehow but half sorts itself out.

Trying some more bits swapping but very very confused

Have you tried pressing "Auto" on your monitor when you see the bios? Its called auto on both my monitors but maybe different on yours, either way, worth a go.

    Might be corrupted EDID data

From the monitor, although I guess it's possible that it could be corrupted by the graphics card.

I had that with an HP laptop, video output wouldn't read the EDID data properly

hmm ok. i will need to try some other monitors. or try this mornitor with another computer.

I'm seeing the monitor as generic non pnp so that sounds right. Just need to find the source now!

I had it where my monitor settings went insane, pushing auto did sort it out for a bit, but also going into the menu options on the monitor itself and "resetting" it also worked

Re: Blurry BIOS and everything else (replacing previous thread)

testing so far with various monitor combinations suggest that it could actually be my dvi cable or some connection somewhere!

GPU seems ok though with this monitor plugged in it booted up with the proper windows logo! I had no idea untili looked it up that the windows logo would be different if it was a montor problem!

Thanks a lot for the help, seems like it's not quite a crisis.. though I haven't played any crysis today... and i wanted to!

Almost definitely the cable arfter even more testing. the only other thing that it could be is the dvi connector itself. My spare cables are all vga.

Re: Blurry BIOS and everything else (replacing previous thread)

In case anyone does a search for this kind of thing adding the solution/result.

Turns out the dvi port on the monitor is screwed, as a result not sending the correct data to the computer/graphics card. So it work when connected with a vga cable. Interestingly older graphics cards would not boot up properly at all resulting in a black screen.

However it seems that new chipsets like the gtx 460 assume that there is some generic television or monitor at the end so output something that would usually be sensible. Had the monitor been a normal resolution and not 16:10 it would still work on DVI-D (digital). Personally I think it's quite impressive that you find out about features on new stuff you didn't even know existed.

VGA mode is a pain though, having to get the position pixel perfect and it's a bit blurry but it'll do until I get a new monitor.

It is actually possible to hack the EDID data into your drivers. Can't remember exactly how I did it, but if you do some googling you should turn up a few bits of advice.
