    Re: hp cpu stepping invalid

this is what i am getting when it powers up.

i tried to install xp and it got to 39 mins left and showed me this.

is this because the cpu stepping is invalid and causing this problem or is it something else.

    Re: hp cpu stepping invalid

tested the hdd in the bios with ide dps self test and it has passed.

done a long format and tried again and it stopped in the same place.
got it running memtest at the moment done 2 passes so far and no errors.

ill check the drive with chkdisc after mem test but not sure what else i can try after that

    Re: hp cpu stepping invalid

Did a quick search and found another forum thread on a similar problem with a HP board:

    http://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/20458...ate-error.html

Looks like downloading the microcode update solved it but it appears they already had the OS installed and could press F1 to boot.

I see you've already posted the link to the update for your board but the install instructions say save to a directory and then execute the file - do you have a hard drive with an OS already installed you can boot to and run the file?

You have 2 choices - pop a older CPU in there and flash, or flash from a environment.

This is why bootable disks like UBCD4Win are so useful

    Re: hp cpu stepping invalid

had a look on the hp site and this can only take a 512kb cpu, the one i have is 1mb 3ghz 800fsb.
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q.../11647_na.html

so if i flash the bios update will this cpu even work in this mobo as i have done 6 passes with memtest and run chkdsk and no errors was found so is this stopping xp from being installed and giving me the bsod.

also does it matter what size hdd i have installed.

    Re: hp cpu stepping invalid

got it going with just one stick of ram in the mobo, both sticks pass memtest so guess the mobo is fussy what ram is used in it.
