    Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    I've been having this problem with my PC for a around a year. I've never been able to sort it out, dispite numerous threads on several forums, so I'm hoping some here might be able to help.

    Firstly, my system;

    I'm running Windows 7 (32bit)
    I have 4GB Memory
    CPU is Pheno II x3 720 3.2Ghz
    Graphics is an ATI HD 4830
    I'm using on-board sound.

    The trigger for the problem is as follows;

    1. Playing 3D games, it usually happens within around 30 minuutes
    2. Skype, within an hour
    3. Trying to encode a video for DVD using windows movie maker, within 15 minutes
    4. trying to use any form of video chat, within around 45 minutes

    What happens: My screen graphics go totally haywire,and my audio goes wild. I get very blocky graphics appearing on the screen, and it's pretty much a challenge to even find the mouse cursor to be able to do a reboot.

    Audio becomes garbled.

    I have multiple applications crash, such as catalyst controll centre (graphics) and other apps depending upon what is running.

    Problem in the system event log when this happens is;

    Code:

    I'm totaly scratching my head as to how I should go about fixing this. The system runs 100% fine until I start using anything like video chat, or 3d games.

    If anyone can help me fix this very iritating problem it would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    Sorry I should have mentioned that. I've just been up to the attic to dig the box out.....

    CoolerMaster, Real Power M620

    I should also mention that I've tried 3 versions of ATI drivers, and have the latest Realtec audio drivers installed.

    What card did you have before the HD4830??

    Have you cleaned out any dust from the card??

    Is the cooling fan running??

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    The system hasn't changed since day 1, it's always had a HD4830, and always had this problem.

    Thank you for your help.

    The fan on the GPU is running yes.

    In terms of dust, that isn't something I have done, but this problem has been happening since everything was brand-new.

    I should also mention that nothing is overclocked.

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    According to the ATI Overdrive Tool
    GPU: 56 degrees C
    Activity 0%
    Fan Speed: 74%

    According to CoreTemp, the CPU readings are;
    CPU#0: 46 degrees C

    In terms of RAM and Motherboard.....any quick way of finding that out without taking them out?

    What HD4830 model do you have BTW??

    The CPU and GPU temperatures seem high if the system is at idle.

    I would use CPU-Z to find out what motherboard and RAM you have:

    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

    Running HWMonitor in the background will also be useful:

    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

    It will log the minimum and maximum temperatures of your CPU and GPU.

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    Thanks...CPU-Z brilliant!

    Motherboard is a JW-790GX-EXTREME

    Memory is 4GB DDR 2
    Channels: D u a l
    DC Mode: Unganged
    NB Freq: 2000.2 Mhz

    Would you suggest I use hardware_monitor to crash the system (which isn't difficult) and see what the temps are when it crashes?

    Just run HWMonitor and see what your CPU and GPU temperatures are like when under load for a minutes.

    OK within a minute of making that last post my system crapped out totally...as expected, and I had to reboot.

    Obviously now I cant see the hardware window to answer your question.

    I was under the impression that by "saving monitoring data" I would be able to look at that info, but it doesnt look like I can.

    I'll try again and let you know in a few minutes what they get to.

    OK, I've just ran SKYPE and FIFA, and the temps went up to;

    CPU Max: 54 degrees C
    GPU Max: 61 Degrees C

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    Just to confirm, 54 for the CPU and 61 for the GPU seems to be as high as they are going.

    Re: Help: Spent months trying to fix graphics crashes

    Just another thing to mention....SKYPE does seem to be quite a good one to actually cause the problem to happen. And it does happen in puerly audio chat, so I'm not certain that this problem is with the GPU.
