    XFX ATi Radeon 6870 question

Bought it from scan a couple days ago and it came today. I installed it, everything seems to be working fine. I have noticed however that the idle temperature is on average 49C. And when playing games like Crysis 2 and Dirt 2, the temperature rises to about 80C. Is the idle temperature correct? It seems very high to me.

I had an ATi 5830 previously and the idle temperature for that card was on average 30C.

Re: XFX ATi Radeon 6870 question

Just read a few other posts regarding the temperature, and it seems normal for the card to give such readings.

Re: XFX ATi Radeon 6870 question

after idling mine and giving them a quick 100% fan blast the temps have gone back up to 53 (PEG0) and 45 (PEG1). its mighty stuffy in here at the moment but your temps are definitely fine - especially the load temp, mine get up to about 90 unless i manually set the fan.

Thanks for the reply. Have you experienced any crashes under these high load temps?

Re: XFX ATi Radeon 6870 question

You shouldn't do, GPUs are happy running a fair bit hotter than CPUs and <90 is quite normal for this type of card. This is an interesting read: http://www.behardware.com/articles/7...teristics.html

Re: XFX ATi Radeon 6870 question

I'm guessing you have the single fan version? I have an XFX Radeon 6870 Black Edition with dual fans and my idle temp at the moment is exactly 30C and my load temps are usually around 55C. I wouldn't worry too much as GPU's can withstand quite a bit of heat compared to CPU's. I've had older Nvidia and ATI cards that would peak at around 90C and never had any problems with them.

    Chnage the stock rubbish cooler.

I have a MSI HD6850 with a Cyclone cooler ( looks like a Zalman cooler ) and idle temps stay around 30-40 and during gaming, it goes to 60
