Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

The computer has been working perfectly fine. I decided to upgrade my RAM. I bought the exact same RAM as before. I placed the 2 extra RAM sticks in the slots that the manual tells me too. They are dual memory sticks. So, all the sticks are connected in the first four slots of the motherboard. Now when I turn the computer on, the screen is black and the keyboard and mouse don't light up. There are some LED's that turn on and stay turned on on the motherboard. They are the PHASE LED and NB PHASE LED and DDR PHASE LED. They are yellow and green.

Before, when I only had two sticks connected, then the LED's also came on, but quickly turn off.

I took out the RAM sticks that I just put in and turned on the computer with just the previous sticks and the computer works fine. Am I right to assume that either the RAM sticks are faulty or the motherboard is faulty??

I could try and replace the RAM sticks and see what happens.

    Any ideas??

when you say the exact same ram as before, is it exactly the same RAM - same timings, speed, everything?

Was it correctly inserted, all sticks fully engaged?

Is your BIOS set to auto detect the change in memory configuration?

If all of these are ok, try removing all RAM and just adding your new RAM in the old slots to see if it works. If so you can rule out a dud module.

    What's your mobo+RAM that you're using?

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

The motherboard is a Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r and the memory is Corsair Memory XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9 XMP ( CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 ). I will have to check the Bios setting. I definitely put the RAM sticks in the right place. The RAM has the same speed, CAS Latency,PC3-12800 (1600) as the other sticks I have.

Are you using dual channel in a triple channel MOBO?

What voltage is the RAM, and is your new RAM also corsair XMS3? Some of the newer dual channel XMS3 is 1.5V - different from the older 1.65V. X58 is a lot more fussy about RAM voltages vs CPU settings so you might have problems if the RAM voltages are different for the two sets.

Do remove the old RAM and insert just the new pair of modules to see if they work. If not try them one at a time. If still nothing (and it's unlikely to get 2 dud modules) then see what your bios settings are for the RAM.

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

I went into the Bios and I got a message straight away saying "The system has experienced boot failures because of overclocking or changes of voltages. Last settings in this page may not coincide with
    current h/w states."

set the memory timings to auto detect, failing that load default bios settings and try again.

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

I have taken out the old RAM modules and put in the new ones. So I still have 4GB. Everything is working fine. After looking at the Bios when the new set of modules is put in, under MB Intelligent Tweaker it says that the DRAM is 1.536v and the VCORE is 1.248v and the Memory Frequency is 1079.88MHz. This is what it says for the old set of modules too.

@Gonzo, what would changing the timings do??

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

x58 chipsets often need more southbridge voltage with full ram slots BUT you still need to run default memory settings before upping voltages

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

Well, the DRAM Timing Selectable is and was already on AUTO. Is that what I was supposed to look for? When looking deeper into the RAM settings, it shows that the RAM settings are all set to auto.

EDIT - I changed the order of the RAM modules. So I have 8GB and the computer booted. It seems to be working now. I checked the system settings and it shows that 8GB of RAM is installed. Not sure whether the order of the RAM modules did the trick. Maybe it was that the RAM modules were not fitted in properly. Thanks for the replies. I will update in the next few days.

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

I speak from VERY painfull and frustrating experience with 4 systems built on the X58A-UD3R, this mobo, both v1 and v2 is a bloody nightmare with memory. I have built systems with 6GB and 12GB, half populated and fully populated, using corsair pc12800 memory and have never stabalised them. My current system is using the only bios I can find that posts and it always fails on cold boot with a recovering lost dram error. Scan returned with NFF, memtest always runs clear. I dont envy you

Re: Computer won't post after RAM upgrade

Never had a problem with that motherboard myself. OPs problem was probably just not seating the RAM correctly.

Check if the memory supports XMP profiles, and if so, enable that in BIOS for some speed improvements.
