Exclamation Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

    Hi All,

I am currently at my friends house trying to fix an issue where his pc is freezing.

First thing I did is install speedfan after booting the PC and it shows the cpu at an idle temp of 90C! and an aux temp of 60C (although I'm not sure what the AUX is?)

I have just reseated the stock cooler to make sure it was on right but it has made no difference. It has the original thermal grease on and is spread evenly. It does feel a little dry but not sure how its suppose to feel after use to be honest? We do not have any grease to re-apply but surely it would make only 1-2 degs difference?

Is there a chance that speedfan would be reporting incorrectly or can this be taken as accurate?

If so and he is getting 90C idle what could be the issue? Faulty proc? I'm really lost as to why he is getting these temps.

The room is cool, all system fans are spinning as is the stock cooler.

Any advice would be great as I don't want his (nearly) brand new CPU to burn out!

    Regards

Boot into the BIOS and see what it reports for the CPU temp?

Never re-use thermal grease. If you've taken it off to have a look then you need to clean it up and put some new stuff on there.

Has he played with overclocks or voltages? Might be worth removing any third party overclocking softwares and reset the BIOS to optimal defaults.

It could make a lot more difference than that. Especially if you've taken the cooler off, you really need to apply a new layer of thermal paste. If it has dried up, and you've reapplied, then the connection will be terrible.

I'm a little dubious that it could've caused the problem in the first place, but it certainly won't be helping now you've removed and reapplied the cooler.

I'd try using CPU-Z and HWMonitor to have a look at the temps in a different piece of software and keep an eye on the speeds at the same time. Could be that the sensor has gone wrong and is misreporting temperatures causing shutdown, that's certainly far too high.

Re: Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

Thanks guys, well I just rebooted straight into the BIOS and it shows the CPU 35C, rebooted straight into windows and speedfan showing 80-90 again. Not sure what to trust!

I see your point about the grease though. Will have to get some asap. So confused about this freezing problem now.

Will see if what a different program tells me.

And nope he has not oc'd anything, no third party software. This freezing issue happened from day two of the pc being built. And happens once or twice a day.

Long time since I used Speedfan but do you have to tell it what chip to use for monitoring or am I getting confused with a different program. Could be it isn't setup right?

Re: Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

I only ever use CoreTemp for measuring CPU temps, that's always been the most reliable for me.

And you absolutely need to get some more thermal paste, as others have mentioned, cos once you've removed the cooler, you need to reapply or the connection between the CPU and the HSF will be awful.

Also, 25'C seems pretty damn low for a GPU temp, I've never had a GPU that idles at anything less than about 35-40 tbh.

Re: Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

I would trust the BIOS over Speedfan. Check HWMonitor as well, it's made by the same people as CPU-Z.

May well be that the freezing is the result of something totally different and that the Speedfan value is wrong.

Re: Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

Ok well panic over. Installed coretemp and it reports around. 35c idle. Think speed fan was playing silly.

Got more compound and doing that task now. Thanks for your help as always.

OP said 35 not 25 so looks fine. An "optical typo"

I was referring to the screenshot of Speedfan, which definitely says 25C.

I've only used Speedfan once, and found it to be inaccurate on every single measurement.

Re: Ugent help needed - 90c temps Idle

You can see on speedfan that the core temps are much lower than the CPU Temp and I have always found the core temps to be ever so slightly higher than CPU. Looks like Speedfan is reading the sensor wrong tbh. I would try something else like RealTemp
