Super Geek Help. Windows XP Virus

I am having a bad day.

Some how my PC got a virus from some where, when it happened I got this tiny little black Bug running all over the screen. rebooted and tried to install Norton Antivirus software to get rid of the virus, No luck.

I have managed to reformat the hard-disk which works fine, but every time I try and install Windows XP it "Freezes".

    Any help or advise welcome.

Odd one, but it may have infected your mbr (master boot record)

    Try:
Boot with the XP installation CD.

When prompted, press R to repair a Windows XP installation.

If repairing a host with multiple operating systems, select the appropriate one (XP) from the menu. If you have only one operating system, enter 1 to select it.

Enter the administrator password if prompted.

To fix the MBR, use the following command:

fixmbr or fdisk /mbr (I cant remember which one for XP)

This assumes that your installation is on the C:\ drive. You will be presented with several scary warning lines the reading of which will make you want to say no. Microsoft is exceptionally vague regarding the conditions under which fixmbr can cause problems although they are clear about the consequences (losing all data on the hard drive), so use this at your own risk.

Type y and ENTER to fix the MBR.

Type exit to leave the recovery console and reboot.

When you boot from the Win XP disk, you should see an option to install XP or Repair. Choose the latter. All this should leave you with is a command prompt, the same as if u'd booted from a floppy. At the command prompt, type 'fdisk /mbr' sans quotes. You'll be asked if you're sure, so hit the 'y'. This will effectively wipe the master bood sector of the hdd of all data.

Try downloading an XP boot disk from here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm & use that.

Could be a possible hardware problem then. If it is with a different disk then either the virus has affected your hardware, which i think is very very rare (not sure though) or something in your hardware is playing up, even though you may have fixed the virus prob. Could be some kind of unlucky double whammy?

This all started when windows gave me the option to install an update for window XP. I thought at the time it was a good idea. i Hit install, and then released that My PC was not setup for internet connection, it was only setup to talk to my mac.

That when i released that this is bad. And the rest is history so to speak. But I cannot understand way or how the operating system is not installing.

Try installing it in another machine, if you can. If you have another machine, try testing the rest of the parts from your no working system like RAM, CPU and PSU, its kinda a long shot but its better to be safer than sorry.
