    No ACPI detection.

Windows XP isn't detecting the ACPI funtions of my Leadtek K7NCR18D PRO II Deluxe Limited nForce II Ultra 400 motherboard. In device manager it recognizes it as 'Standard PC' instead of the usual 'Standard ACPI blah blah'. This was fine until I formatted my Windows drive the other day becuase of an unexpected BSOD that caused all sorts of problems. Also, under the device properties of this purported 'Standard PC' I have this:

The BSOD I received had somthing to do with IRQ's. I have flashed my motherboards BIOS but no luck. Any suggestions? I want my ACPI back!? Why has my computer suddenly turned against me?

    Cheers

Is it one of these boards with APIC support?

Anyway... try updating your motherboard's nForce drivers.

Sorry I left out all of things I have done to alleviate these problems, because the list would be huge, so yes I have tried different nforce driver versions, now using the latest and it's the same on all. Yes it is an APIC enabled motherboard and I have APIC enabled in the BIOS, i've never seen the 'IRQ Steering' screen before though when my ACPI was detected correctly. Also in 'power options' in 'control panel' I have checked the 'Enable Advanced Power Management Support' checkbox under the APM tab.

My motherboard is an APIC board, and I've never had problems with it.

However, I did read (in the BIOS, as a matter of fact) that disabling APIC when an OS has been installed with it enabled, will knacker things up.

You could maybe try reinstalling XP, or uninstalling "Standard PC" from within safe mode and rebooting. Or you could go even more extreme, and reinstall XP with APIC turned off...

APIC? What's the difference between that and ACPI?

APIC gives you more than the standard 15 IRQ's. They come up in device manager as a PCI IRQ, rather than an ISA IRQ. Don't ask me about IRQ steering and all that... I don't have a clue about it, lol.

Forgot about that, i'm gonna try the safe mode trick, back in a bit! (I hope)

Hmm you can't remove it in safe mode.

I disabled APIC mode in the BIOS and nothing changed, didnt do anything, at all. Do you think this is what the problem is? APIC isn't working? The BSOD I received said somthing along the lines of 'IRQ_LESS_THAN_.....'. Has somthing been knackered on my motherboard? I've had everything out and just running it on the bare minimum no difference. The PCI IRQ routing disabled and IRQ table not found sounds ominous. How can I check to see if ACPI and APIC are functioning properly in LINUX????

In SuSE the control centre tells me ACPI is only partially installed, and I cannot access it's functions. When I installed Linux it was working perfectly.

Turn APIC back on then - you aren't supposed to enable/disable it without reinstalling the OS.

Ok. I've fixed it without reformatting, no thanks to you guys, bah (only kiddin' ). Thanks for your help. Lookout below if you ever get the same problem and want it solved without reinstalling Windows completely.

Seems when I reinstalled Windows it didnt inpsect my system correctly. Why you ask? Becuase Windows XP setup is stupid (no, really). So if you computer is ever detected 'wrongly' this is what you need to do. Boot from your windows XP CD. When it says 'Press F6 if you need to sintall a 3rd party SATA/RAID driver', press *F5* instead. You will be taken to a screen where you can choose between various Hardware Abstract Layers (such as ACPI, Standard, Legacy, MultiProcessor, UniProcessor). When its done loading drivers, choose 'Setup Windows XP' accept the license agreement, after it has scanned your HDD for previous installations, choose your current XP installation and press 'r' (repair). If you have installed any Windows Updates, chances are your system will be a little unpredictable, but as soon as you reinstall those updates, your computer will be 'exactly' as it was before. You won't lose any programs or stuff like that, all you may need to do is reinstall some drivers.

Well I'd never have guessed it stuck the wrong HAL and system config on there!

Nice work finding that one yamangman, I'll add that to my list of things to remember!

Number of problems had by Kez with APIC: 0
That's with XP Pro and Debian.

    Maybe I'm just lucky.
