New HiS HD 6950 and P5N-e SLI problem?

    Hi,

I just got a new graphics card, a HiS HD 6950 ICEQ and can't seem to get it working.

It's all connected fine, but when I power up the PC the card's fan is very loud and I don't get any kind of picture. Windows actually boots fine (I can hear the start up sound), but I can't see anything.

I'm not 100% what's going on here, but I think that the card is either incompatible with the MOBO (ASUS P5N-e SLI) or it isn't getting enough power.

The card requires two 6-pin PCI-E connectors, but I only have one; fortunately it comes with two little converters that each take two 4-pin power cables and give you a 6-pin connector - problem solved. HOWEVER, in the installation instructions they recommend not using this kind of setup, but instead have a PSU that has two 6-pin connectors... even though they supply you with the equipment to do so.

So, can anyone please give me a little advice here. As I see it I'm doing something very wrong or I need to get a new MOBO or a new PSU, and I don't particularly want to buy one and find out its not necessary.

    Thanks!

    EDIT:

I believe the PSU is a Hiper Type M 630w.

I had exactly the same issue with a P5N-E SLI and a 6870. With me
the computer would visibly boot once every twenty or so attempts. It would seem that the motherboard has a few issues with non Nvidia gfx cards. I ended up replacing the motherboard.

Re: New HiS HD 6950 and P5N-e SLI problem?

    Try updating the motherboard bios

The asus website mentions fixing amd graphics card hangs when booting:
    P5N-E SLI BIOS 1406
Fix it takes long time to show up on screen with certain AMD graphic card when booting up the system.

If that doesnt work it could be caused by it not getting enough power.
On your molex to 6 pin adapter make sure you are using two different rails from your psu for each molex and try unplugging some unnecessary things from the molex rails (cd/dvd drive additional hard drives fans etc) to see if you can get it to boot.

Old topic (think the author solved the problem by replacing the mobo):
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...e-630w-problem

You said that your psu came with 2*8 pin pcie cables and 1*6 pin pcie cable. It should have also come with 8 pin to 6 pin adapters instead of having to use the molex adapter.

Yeah, as sam3 said, I eventually replaced the motherboard. Next time I'll do a little more research.

Strange, I don't think I got one of those adapters with PSU. When I looked, I couldn't even find something like that online, all I could find was a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter.

Re: New HiS HD 6950 and P5N-e SLI problem?

Most Radeon 5/6 series cards are PCI-E 2.1 which can cause problems with some older boards that use PCI-E 1.0/1.1 slots (even though it's supposed to be fully backwards compatible)... Radeon cards that state they are PCI-E 2.0 should work fine on older 1.0/1.1 boards.
