    The Famous ASUS (hinge issue)

    Hi all,

I hope this counts as a tech headache - if its in the wrong area, sorry and hope it can be moved.

My laptop is a 3/4 year old Asus x56, (MB-M51VR) with a broken hinge, useless dvd drive, bad usb ports and no audio out

While I have managed to adapt to the other problems (external dvd drive, creative sound USB plugin etc) I really want to try and fix the hinge problem.

Below is a link to a close up picture of the left hinge, attaching the folding screen to the main chasis. Effectively the metal has snapped and so i cant screw it back in.

I have found a potential hinge replacement - just no idea how id go about doing it. There are screws visible under the screen, but im not sure how much disassembly it would require.

I do relish a challenge, and any advice would be welcome, Im sure someone else has come across it at some point!

    Cheers

The bad news is that it looks like the metal socket that the screw that fixes the display assembly to the laptop goes into has broken off (see round bronze coloured object attached to the screw in your photo). You will likely also have to buy a new bottom case.

I do not recommend doing this yourself, unless you have some experience taking things apart (ie: mobile phone, xbox360, ps3...).

Before you buy anything the laptop needs to be disassembled, to find out exactly what needs replacing.

yep as summoner said, the chassis is damaged not the bracket. easy to do if you don't mind stripping a laptop down but its beyond most peoples skill levels.

Re: The Famous ASUS (hinge issue)

took the easy route and sent it to asus for repairs, will update to let you know results

EDIT: Has anyone had any experience with Letmerepair.com? http://www.letmerepair.com/pages/loc...t-kilbride.php

Apparently it's been sent there and I wondered if anyone had any experience they could pass on.

    Thanks
