    Restarting

I am running windows 7 with all updates. No changes have been made to my computer recently. When I go to Start - Restart the computed closes down but does not restart. I have to keep my finger on the power button then switch on. Any ideas on why this is happening and what I can do to rectify the problem? Thanks

If no changes have been made to the bios then i would state its hardware failure 1 of 3 things

    1) PSU under powering

    2) Motherboard problem (Try reseting bios with jumper on the motherboard see manual for details)

    3) Ram fault

Or you have the Close down PC setting wrong go to Start - Control panel - Power options - which ever preffered plan is in use - change plan settings - change advance power settings - power button and lid - Power button action - should be 2 options here one for restart and one for shut down if only one exsists then look at whats enabled under that tab.

    Re: Restarting

Any changes made in the systems power saving settings? Did you alter the system at all (software or hardware) to coincide with the issue appearing?

    Re: Restarting

it may be the power supply - if i had a spare one then i would swap it over to see if it still does the same. process of elimination

    Re: Restarting

Could be lots of things causing this. Might be worth disconnecting all external devices, then trying again. If still no luck, start disconnecting any non essential internal devices (pci cards, USB headers, etc) and try again.
If you're still having no luck, might be worth trying a linux boot cd and seeing if it turns off normally then. If it doesn't, then probably mobo or PSU fault (most likely mobo). If it does turn off, then start standard windows troubleshoointg such as testing it in safe mode, disabling start up apps, running system restore.

Had something similar happen many years ago, turned out to be a piece of CD recording software I installed which hooked into the atapi drivers. Took a while to figure that thing out.
