Thread: External Hdd showing as unformatted, works in others.

    Unhappy External Hdd showing as unformatted, works in others.

    Hey guys, i have a 320 2.5" but Samsung NC10 (xp) but works fine in a mates HP Mini (7) is it an OS thing or what?
    It was originally formatted in 7.
    Its a Toshiba MK3263GSX if it matters.

    Have you tried formatting in both fat32 and ntfs ?

    Well, the data on it is more important at the moment, so no, but i still cant figure out why it would show up like that in the first place.

    Well i personally would back up wehat everb is on it onto another form of media and format it again as suggested in my other post and see how you get on. Hope this helps

    If it was originally formatted in NTFS on 7 then it might have issues with XP, as every version of Windows seem to make slight tweaks to NTFS that stop it being backwards compatible (I saw this issue when swapping drives between XP and 2000 back in the day ).

    If it's essential that you can use it on both 7 and XP, back up the data off it, reformat it on XP, then copy the data back on. Alternatively, upgrade your computer from XP to 7

    Sounds like the drive has been formatted in exFAT, you'll need this update for XP to read it if it has: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704

    I ended up copying the stuff off it and then formatting it, thanks anyways...
