Optical Drive has disappeared
Hi all, I just moved all of my hardware from my old case into a new case today, I powered up and found that my bluray drive had disappeared. I can see it in Device Manager but it has a yellow warning next to it. I've tried updating the driver but it tells me that all is up to date. When I clicked on properties of the drive, the device status read:
'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)'
I searched around on the internet (especially the microsoft help forums) and the general advice was to go into the registry and find the appropriate key and then delete 'lower filters' and 'upper filters'. I found the right key but I can only see 'upper filters' and not lower.
What should I do? All the solutions that I have seen make it clear that you must delete both filters and if one is missing then this solution isn't advised. Should I take the risk and go ahead and delete upper filters or leave it?
Re: Optical Drive has disappeared
Export the reelvant part of the registry to a file so you can merge it back in if it doesn't work. THEN delete the filters entry and see what happens.
Re: Optical Drive has disappeared
Thanks for the speedy reply,
I didn't know what exporting was but quickly found out it was just backing up. Thanks for bringing this because I've never been confident enough to touch anything in the registry files, at least now I know I can back it up before attempting anything.
Anyway, I deleted the upper filter and rebooted. Thankfully this solved my problem, the drive is back up and running and is properly being recognised. I'm a bit miffed that microsoft don't have advice for people who don't have both filter entries
How do I change the status of the thread to resolved?
