PC froze, shut down, no post

I was in the middle of a game on my PC last night, when the PC froze and shut down. And it will not Post anymore. On pressing the power button, the keyboard and mouse light up for a split second, then go off, the fans fire up, and then some stop. All of the power phase lights stay on, and that is it.
No display, no beeps, no keyboard, no mouse, nothing.
    I have tried the following;
    Remove RAM, including swapping sticks/positions
    Removing GPU
    Removing hdd's
    Removing all ancillaries
The PSU works in an old PC.(and 3700+, ati 4890)
I have now run out of ideas. I don't have another PSU to try in the machine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like you've done all the obvious. All that's left is MoBo or CPU.
You've checked all cables I assume.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: PC froze, shut down, no post

When I installed the PSU in the old machine, I only had the mono/CPU cables, HDD power for one ssd, and the GPU leads. This worked the old machine fine, but when back in my main machine, no post. Same cables.

Thanks Phage, I thought it may have been down those lines. Was hoping it would be a PSU issue. Much cheaper. Can see this getting expensive.

Is the CPU fan definitely turning?

It could be the motherboard - I would check the VRM section.

Re: PC froze, shut down, no post

The CPU fan is turning, the GPU fan is turning, and one if the four case fans is turning. All fans spin for about two seconds, then several stop, leaving the afore mentioned fans running..

Does your motherboard have a CMOS reset switch or jumper? If not you could take the battery out to reset the CMOS. You never know...

Re: PC froze, shut down, no post

Tried removing the battery, and forgot about it for a good hour. Made no difference. Am now resigned to the fact that either the CPU or mobo has bitten the bullet. This will mean that I need to replace both ask am not sure which has died.
Will need to also replace the PSU, as it is about 3 years old, and I don't know if that has played a part.

Just remembered that I had two sticks of ram die about two months ago. But I had a spare set, so totally forgot to do anything about it.
Silver lining: good excuse to grab a 3570K & Z77 mobo

It might be the motherboard. IIRC,Pob255 had the same motherboard and the VRM went. I would inspect the motherboard.

Re: PC froze, shut down, no post

Thanks all, I will remove the heatsinks from the VRM, and have a look. I am resigned to the fact that I will need to replace the mobo/cpu, and am just pricing bits up now. Either it is Mobo, or CPU, but I am not going to get a replacement for either of them, too old now.

Suppose I had better get another what bits thread going. Cheers again!

Re: PC froze, shut down, no post

Sorry, but my money is on the PSU. Often see problems like this. One of the channels is not delivering enough current, so the Motherboard doesnt even go to BIOS, failing this, then it's likely to be something like a blown capacitor, but these days, this appears to be quite rare
