Cannot complete disk defragment

I've recently tried to do a disk defragment because i keep getting messages bout illegal operations and general annoying problems. However, about 56% of the way through the derfragment the computer froze. I havent been able to defragment for about 5 months. Is this something I should worry about, is the hardrive on its last legs. P.S Its a 7 month old install of win 98se. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

What defrag program you using?

The one in accesories, system tools, disk defragmenter. I think thats the standard win98se defragmenter.

I doubt this is related but any stopped all programs from reading/writing in background?
