    Application error (advanded)

This is one of the weirdest thing ever happened to me. Basically I somehow downloaded some rar file that I thought it was genuine but it appeared to be fake and it did some bizzare installation in the background.

Now I have every programme changed to an icon of a 7z(like a WinRAR) and everything opens in a 7z. No matter itunes, chrome, spotify, you name it. Everything opens with a 7z showing the programme directory and that's it! I can still open itunes by using 'Open with' or through individual music files, just not through the direct way. This is the same with MS Word and other things. I tried to remove 7z, the error is still here only with the programme gone.

I tried to look into programs and features to see if there is any new programe causing problems but nothing showed up. So I went into the regedit and see if there's any new registry logged so I can find out what happened but these system programmes have also become inaccessible, saying 'application not found', as if the whole .exe application script is wiped off the PC! This also makes me unable to open System Restore never mind performing it. I am completely stuck. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem before?

Once you got a Mac, you won't go back (apart from playing games, of course).

The virus (guessing keygen?) has disassociated .exe file types, and caused them to be recognised as something else.

You will need to try and restore the default file type association via importing a .reg file

Try this, and please report back.

Thank you so much I have downloaded that registry and started merging the files. Soon enough the programmes started to respond properly so I quickly accessed back to my system restore and went back to my previous point. Everything is back to normal now apart from the fact that the icons are still weird and the my Anti-Virus programme have licencing issues due to me restoring the system. However it's a minor problem.

It is strange how it managed to bypass the flagging from anti-virus and window admin when it did the 'install'

    Thanks again

Although you've managed to fix the specific problem you asked about, it sounds like you ran a virus.

Make sure that you've completely eradicated the virus, because it's possible that it's still on your computer doing evil things even after you did a System Restore.
