Alternative to using a table and office chair for working 12 hours a day at a PC

Hi,

I live in a one bedroom flat and I'd like to open up my lounge. Currently I have a table in the lounge and my 24 monitor on the desk.

I should also note that I work at home and can put in 12 hours days so it's important that where I sit is comfortable.

My question is this - has anyone used any of the following setups working from home

What can I use to put the monitor and keyboard on? As I'm working and typing I've looked for something like a laptop table but none of them look big and stable enough for a 23 inch monitor and keyboard . Something like a laptop table that can go underneath and then over the chair.

But if I used that then a reclining chair doesn't seem an option so I'm thinking maybe to sit on an armchair but I'm not sure that working 12 hours in an armchair would be comfortable.


Reason I'd like to do this is I'm in a one bedroom flat and my 'office' is also my lounge and instead of using a table and office chair - use something to replace the table but still be able to work 12 hours. I was thinking maybe a wall bracket arm for the 23 inch monitor so I can swing it round to face me during the day and then just swing it flat to the wall at the end of the day. However, as far as having a swing arm for the monitor I have plasterboard and I'm worried about fitting it badly.

Appreciate if any works from home and has done any alternatives. Oh just to note I can't use a laptop as I need a big screen monitor and in any case I couldn't have a laptop sitting on my lap for the length of time I'd be sitting at it.

I don't like either of those. For sitting I suggest that you want something that will naturally support your back all the way up to your head. Something with lots of adjustment so you can set it to fit you. I find a large desk/table the best to work at, but if you are tight on space that probably doesn't work. The narrower tables that have extendable bits, like a keyboard shelf, would probably be my recommendation. Or if you have a free corner then you may be able to use a corner unit.

I used the former in such a situation while I was working in the US. I then put the sofa with its back to the desk so the lounge was effectively divided, and you couldn't see the desk when sat in the "lounge bit".

I will always offer a Kinnarps chair for this. I had one on "Access to work" in Dec 2001 and am still using it. I have fibromyalgia and so a really supportive chair was essential, I was (then) able to sit for at least 8 hours. Sadly since then it's been downhill all the way but I still love my chair.

Huge problems with that combo, and using a recliner causes more problems than it solves.
First off, since it is a recliner, you are always leaning back, which is great for media consumption, but not so great for office work/pc gaming with a keyboard and mouse. You also lack swivel, so if you had a desk you could actually sit under with it, it will be a huge pain to get in and out of it - unless the desk/table itself was on wheels?

The table on the other hand is a worse idea, with a chair like that you will be sitting too far back to use anything on it.

I have been thinking of getting a recliner similar to that for a while now, not for use on a desk of course, but if I did want to achieve that, I would go for a hideaway cabinet of some sorts. Perhaps like this secretary desk:
Only thing that would worry me is the height of the desk and the recliner.

So yea, hideaway cabinet like a secretary desk or a wheely desk/table. Neither sit well with me but you might like them.

Thanks ever so much to thank you Thorsson, cookie365, g8ina and hesham1516 for all the advice. Thanks for ruling out the recliner, I hadn't thought about the kneeler but while I think its good maybe not for 12 hours a day. Thank you for the ergonomic chair link - think I might go for that. Also the corner unit and extendable table - think one of those would be good certainly would fit in a smaller space and open up the lounge.

it's great if you game at the PC. iv got my xbox connected to my monitor and play PC games. thats where the reclining is nice... it is actually OK for sitting up too though. i don't know about 12 hrs a day. any chair is gonna give u trouble 12 hrs a day. u need to move! stretch etc. u could also be reclined on the recliner and use a logitech k400 provided u make ur text on ur screen big for sitting further away
