GPU temp high and unexpected shut downs

Is there much dust around your case, cable management obstructing airflow e,t,c?

I wouldn't say so no. I suppose it doesn't help that the air coming in had to pass through the HDs, some metal and most of the cables though.

That's fine. Cables look a mess but they don't really hinder airflow. The 'extreme' example posted actually looks like it's set up quite well for cooling.

Your assuming there is no fan at the front of the Case

you could do the old "take the side off the case" test, and see what temps you get then. that way it'd rule out (or condemn) the airflow.

Ah I forgot to mention that, I've had the side of the case off for this whole time, so all temps and what not are with the side off

so...cpu and gpu temps are running pretty high with the side off. are the heatsinks dust free, no dust matted up and hidden anywhere in them?

might be worth putting the front fan on the side mount (is it the window case or normal one?) and see what happens (or putting a spare on if you've got one).

The cpu heatsink looks a bit dust filled but I'm struggling to get the fan off to clean it haha. GPU looks pretty dust free. I've ordered a couple of fans, one for the top (exhaust) and one for the side (input). Its the one with the window in btw.

what cpu cooler have you got? the top down ones can pack the dust up nice.

the side mount on the window case looks like it benefits the gpu mostly. popping a fan on there and de-dusting the cpu heatsink should cool things down a bit.

Only if you're interested in looks. That system will run much hotter due to the components, despite the cable tidyness.

If temps with the side off are that high then a couple of extra case fans aren't really going to help.

Cleaning out fans might- can of compressed CO2 might be a good idea or they could be shot and need replacing. But it's very strange to see both GPU and CPU temps so high with the case off. I'd almost be tempted to start looking at what voltages are actually being supplied to the components, checking BIOS updates etc.

Its the stock cooler. Im not sure what you mean by top down, it faces the side of the case with the plastic window and is on the side of the heatsink. if you lay the mobo flat it would face downwards though.

aye, it'll be top down. means it blows down towards the mobo (most after-market tower style coolers blow "across" the mobo). the stock ones are the worst for packing dust onto the heatsink as there's nowhere for the dust to escape, so the dust acts as an insulator, keeping the cpu nice and toasty...which isn't ideal.

I could definitely see that being the case. could it be that the GPU always being hot, and the CPU being a bit clogged up has pushed it over the edge? Is there anyway to clean the heatsink without removing it?

it could be that...gpu's kick off a lot of heat, so combine that with a cpu that's not getting sufficient cooling and it spells trouble.

a can of air is the best bet. it's a hell of a lot easier to clean if you can take it off though...that way you can deposit the dust outside the case, instead of onto the mobo. i've cleaned heavily dusted heatsinks without taking them off, a small brush is good for it (i used a brush that came with hair clippers), one that can get inside the heatsink.

I gave that a try and it has certainly helped with the cpu, lowest temp was 22 and it seems to be hovering around 30 now idle. the gpu is still as hot.
