    PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

My PC is always on all day. Maybe once per day I can hear the USB disconnect/connect noise even though I never plugged anything in or removed anything.

From what I remember there's something you can do in the DOS command prompt to tell you what USB device is causing the sound but I can't recall what to do.

Does anybody know or do you have some other way for me to find out what's causing the problem? Thanks

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

The power problem is most likely to be related to "USB SUSPEND MODE" kicking in.

    • Go to <Control Panel> select <Power Options>

    • Depending on which power plan you're in, either 'Balance' or 'Power Saver', select the <Change plan settings> accordingly

    • Select <Change advanced power settings> and expand <+USB settings> by clicking on the <+> sign

    • Expand further the <+USB selective suspend setting> by clicking on the <+> sign

    • Set both <On battery> & <Plugged in> to 'Disabled' and click 'Apply'

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

The "USB selective suspend setting" only has "Setting Enabled" under it. Should I just change that to disabled?

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

Thanks, I tried that and I'm still hearing the noises. Does anybody have the answer to what I asked in my 1st post?

Or is there another way to solve the problem?

Maybe check the Event viewer logs after you hear the noise to see if anything being enabled or disabled is logged?

As above event viewer should show what driver/device is doing this.

Any usb HDD's spinning down or phones/tablets with sharing (usb/wifi) going into standby?

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

Could you post a list of the things you have plugged in to your USB ports.

Still be a power drain issue, like maybe you have a couple of USB powered HDD and LED back lighted keyboard.

You can if you have time, unplug everything from USB and see if it still makes the sound and plug one back in.

Low tech way to fit it, would be to disable the sound for the USB plug -__-

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

I have found recently that my machine keeps dropping external HDD and refinding them almost instantly leading to exactly the same sound as the OP reports. Not found a fix yet, I've tried setting HDD not to be put to sleep, that hasn't fixed it. More annoying is that if you're file transfering at the time the FT gets dropped too, and it refinds the drive as if it is a new connection (with all the automated "what would you like to do now" window pop-ups) I have been putting it down to a dodgy front panel, as it doesn't seem to do it from the rear ports.

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

How do I access the event viewer logs?

I don't have any external hard drives plugged in. I'd like to get to the root of the problem so I don't want to disable the USB sound. My screen freezes for a second when I hear the sound so it's not very good for when I'm watching a video.

I don't get any popups I just hear the sound.

Press Windows key + R and type eventvwr.msc then click OK to open up Windows Event viewer. Expand "Windows Logs" and I believe it would be under system or application that would report it.

Nothing is plugged in to the USB ports except for keyboard and mouse?

What do I do when I get to System or Applications? Do I click on Open? What do I do to find the cause of the USB noise?

Re: PC makes USB disconnect/connect noise

when you hear the noise, note the time.

Look in the event log file to find what process matches the time. What does it say?

    Mr

It's also worthwhile looking in Device Manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc if you need to find it) since this isn't just a USB event noise. If there's a device dropping in and out, mostly likely due to drivers, then you can hear this too. Even when nothing is physically being attached or disconnected. This is just Windows playing device peekaboo.

The event logs should help along with checking whether there are any yellow alerts in the device list. If there are then updating or reinstalling drivers might well be your next step.

Random question - are you using any beta drivers?
