Question TFT monitor - help on response times!

Hi, I hope someone can help me. On a 19" TFT monitor which is the better response time to look for?

I know that I need one that is 20ms or less, however what I need to know is, if the response time is lower - is that better?

I have found two monitors so far with quite low response times - one is 12ms and one is 16ms - would it be better to go with the 12? Or will it make no difference if it was 20?

    Thank you

The lower the better! 12 is better then 16... but there are other factors as well, ie. contrast ratio, grey scal and so on...

Also there is something else to consider when looking at response times.

    Little explanation required.

A tft works by having a backlight shining through a red green and blue subpixel, to create the various colours it uses these in different strengths. Black is no sub pixels, white is all sub pixels.

The response time is the time it takes for the screen to go from black to white (rise)and back to black (fall).

Be carefull of companys that advertise 10 or 15ms responce times as usually that is only either the rise or fall, make sure you know its the complete rise and fall.

Also if you can you are better comparing the gray response time (but if not just use the manufacturers one).

Pick some screens out and post model numbers here, the people from hex will help you choose.

    Hey thank you for that!

As the monitor is required for someone who does a lot of gaming, I need a monitor that won't cause any 'lagging'.

I have found two models which interest me so far:

    LG L1915S

    160 degree horizontal viewing angle
    160 degree vertical viewing angle
    1280 x 1024 native resolution
    12ms response time
    250 cd/m2 brightness
    500:1 contrast ratio
Without wanting to cause excess scolling here are a few more of the specs for this model:
    1024 x 768 : 60/70/75 Hz
    1280 x 1024 : 60/75 Hz
    Brightness : 250 cd/m2
    Contrast Ratio : 500:1
Horizontal Scan Frequency kHz : 31~83 kHz
    Native Resolution : 1280 x 1024
    Pixel Configuration : RGB
    Pixel Pitch (mm) : 0.294
    Viewing Angle - Horizontal : 160
    Viewing Angle - Vertical : 160

The second TFT which has also caught my eye is:

    BenQ FP937s 12ms - flat panel display - TFT - 19"

    Max Resolution 1280 x 1024
    Compliant Standards TCO '03
Colour support Up to 16.2 million colors
Digital Video Standard Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
Dot Pitch / Pixel Pitch 0.294 mm
    Interfaces 1 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)
    1 x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI
    Features IKey
    Video Bandwidth 135 MHz
Colour support Up to 16.2 million colors
    Response Time 12 ms
Dot Pitch / Pixel Pitch 0.294 mmImage Brightness 250 cd/m2
    Image Contrast Ratio 500:1
    Image Max H-View Angle 140
    Image Max V-View Angle 140

Sorry for causing so much scrolling!

But if there is anyone out there that does do a lot of online gaming, with a 19" that you would recommend please let me know, as i am a noobie when it comes to TFT;s!

The benq is supposed to be good although it will be more expensive than first one (1st has no dvi input).

Whats your budget btw will help people make suggestions.

Max of £400 inc VAT if poss.
DVI is best - could you expllain what that is, does it not come with all monitors?

Also, if a monitor is DVI - does the graphics card that your computer has need to then have a DVI output? Or does it not affect anything like that?

    Explanation no prob,

All graphics cards are digital they process digital information, when they send out the information they have processed it is either in 1 of two modes "15 pin dsub vga" or dvi.

To process vga the graphics card needs to turn the information from digital to analogue and then send it along a cable.

To process dvi the signal doesn't need to be converted, so its shown on the screen exactly how it should be, there is no need to adjust a dvi screen (width of image height etc) as it is displayed exactly how it should be, colour and all.

Bit more info here and here
