    HELP!!Missing Himem.sys, Dblbuff.sys and Ifshlp.sy!!!

hi - i turned on my computer [not this one - i'm at work now] the other day to be greeted with a list of 'error, windows cannot start' type messages with three files coming up as either missing of corrupted...after a bit of investigating it appears as though they are missing. they are
    c:\windows\Himem.sys
    c:\windows\Dblbuff.sys
    c:\windows\Ifshlp.sys

i've run scanreg /fix which doesn't seem to do anything more than check the regisry and not the files themselves. It does com eup against a problem when checking c:\windows\system.dat similarly scanreg /restore doesn't offer any solution to the problem.
Its windows 98 and I have the original CD to hand so is there anything I can do - short of a re-install [aaargh!] to fix the problem? if i did re-inst. into the existing space on the HD could I just do it as a temporary thing and copy what would be the new files as above into the old windows folder and then scrub the re-intalled version and revert to the old one again? [bit of a round-a-bout way of getting the ones i need but i can't see any other way of doing it] or doesn't it work like that...
    pleeeese help!
[computers - great when they're working, not great when they don't]

    ah, cheers.
is the file 'win.com' important at all?cause along with all its other rambling errors it also spits out the message that win.com cannot be found...which is nice.

    Yes...very very important. Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q136630/

Win.com begins the loading of core system files when 9X is booting.

well, it did work but only so far...
I managed to restore the himem, dblbuff and ifshlp.sys files into their right places in the c:\windows\ folder but when I tried to correct the win.com file i run into a few problems...
i extract the win.cnf file off the cd and place it in the right folder, I then rename it to win.com using the command 'ren c:\~\win.cnf c:\~\win.com
i then restart and again i get the error 'win.com missing
I perform a search and it seems it is not where I put it, its gone!
I go through the procedure of extracting it off the cd again - put win.cnf into the folder with the aim of renaming it again.
when I write out the command to rename it it says something along the lines of 'cannot rename, file name already exists in folder'...WTF??
i search for win.com but its not there...

    whats going on?!
