    Is it possible that.....

My PSU isn't powerful enough and is causing my Hdd's to crash? Every now and again, completly randomly, either 1 of my hard drives will power down but the computer will stay on.

I only have a 360W PSU, and the following running off it:

    Xp 3000
    Abit AT7
    Samsung 512 DDR
    2 x Hdd's
    2 x Cd drives
    2 x 80mm fans

So do i need a much more powerful PSU, or is it something more sinister (and expensive)

    Ben

you also have a video card if its one of the newer ones (ati, nforce ) they need a lot of power - have you checked all connectors? your cpu is also a power hungry one - do you have hibernation on? What OS ? But i suspect its cooling How is your cooling ?. When was the last time you cleaned inside the case and used compresed air to clean the fans out - if you case sits on the floor - its best after cleaning to move it up off the floor 4-6 inches ( just get some old 2x4s or something)

got a ati 9700 pro. Xp pro. Heat is fine, hard drives have their own 80mm fan in the hard drive cage. I have the side off at the mo so i dont think its a heat problem. It sits on my desk and its squeeky clean.

Have you looked at your powersaving settings (control panel/power)? Power-saving is turned on by default on a new Windows install.
