    Is my Graphics Card DOA?

Hi all - I was wondering if there's anything i'm missing before trying to RMA my new card.

    Setup:
    MSI P67A GD53 Motherboard
    i5 2500K
    PSU: Corsair AX860i

    Problem:
New ASUS R9 280 Strix Graphics card will not output any signal

    Symptoms:
All fans spin up and the LED lights for the card are green, I *think* the machine boots to windows since I can ping it by machine name from elsewhere on the network.

    Remedies Tried:
    1. The PSU is new - was originally running on 600W and getting problems so took the opportunity to upgrade my PSU which should now have more than enough headroom for now and future - prior to this the machine was refusing to POST
    2. Fully checked that the card was seated properly
    3. Flashed the motherboard BIOS to the latest version, no joy.
    4. Tried both DVI outputs - no joy

Does anyone know if i'm missing something?

Re: Is my Graphics Card DOA?

Might sound basic but make sure both the power pins are plugged in properly, the fans and LEDs should come on with the PCIe power alone, but the extra power is needed to get any output.

A had an r9 270X that did a similar thing (corrupt output) until I removed and refitted the card and 12v power plugs.

What card was in before the 280? Do you get output from your on-board graphics? Might need to go to BIOS change something there.

Can you access the bios and if so have you set the graphics card to be the first device to be used?

Re: Is my Graphics Card DOA?

It was a 6950 before and there's no onboard graphics.
As far as the BIOS goes, I haven't really looked at the settings since it seems perfectly happy to output to the 6950, so I assumed everything was fine as far as that went.
I can't get into the BIOS with the card in, since no monitor output at all from powering up.

Maybe boot into windows with igp and have a look. Try separate output port hdmi maybe. Cycle through monitor inputs on monitor display.

Re: Is my Graphics Card DOA?

What bios revision are you on exactly I know you say latest but do you mean latest recommended bios which I believe is 1.19 or one of the later ones (4.3) that are supposed to only be for later cpu's? I had this exact problem with a 290 card and thought it was DOA, Novatech said not and told me to update bios, once i did bang the card worked perfectly. If you are on the latest bios then I'm all out of ideas.

Re: Is my Graphics Card DOA?

IIRC I had a similar problem with my non modular xfx psu and 7970 where I'd used a power output that fitted the card but wasn't *marked* pci-e. Once I had both card power inputs connected to psu outputs marked pci-e all was well. So worth double checking that too.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.
