PC keeps losing BIOS settings despite replacement CMOS battery...?

As the title says, my PC keeps losing its BIOS settings when switched-off, despite having bought and installed a new CMOS battery. Does anyone have any advice? I've checked that the new battery is seated properly in the socket, and yes, I remembered to peel off the plastic prior to inserting the new battery

did you check that nothing is pressing against the BIOS reset switch, or if the BIOS reset jumper is in the correct place?

could be a faulty battery.

if its a board with a removable BIOS chip, is it firmly seated in the slot.

could also be a faulty CPU/Memory - on my PC if the ram isn't in the slot properly (I've got a slightly damaged slot) every time I boot, I get BIOS has reset to defaults, memory speed has changed message.
