It could be that one of the devices you had plugged in has gone faulty and was causing an interrupt storm or something. I don't think it's all that common but I have seen it happen more than once, so maybe try plugging things back in one at a time to see if it's one item in particular causing the problem.
Having some devices drawing too much power could also be a problem e.g. a lot of bus-powered hard drives.
The culprit seems to be a wall powered usb hub designed by <admin edit > Anker. It only one thing connected to it my logitech c920 webcam.
It's this.

Glad you got to the bottom of it . Was the hub new, or has it just developed a fault?

Lol I'm surprised that was edited out. The hub was fairly new and I have no idea why its drawing enough power to mess everything up. Its wall powered so there really shouldn't be a problem right?
I'd contact Anker about it, they always seem to put notes in their products asking for feedback and to report any issues etc. Could just be a faulty one doing something strange e.g. interrupt storm as I suggested above.
Is the wall plug working? Some hubs will draw power from the host if they don't have external power. Is it USB2 or 3?

I quite like the look of that Anker hub, probably acts a lot better than one I got off Scan recently. I have always found Anker to be pretty good quality so as has already been said could just be a faulty one.
