My SSD is apparently perfect, so why is it BSOD'ing?!

This problem has plagued me for years, but has now gotten to the point where I can no longer write anymore to the SSD, with 60GB remaining.

It started near enough when I bought it, the odd BSOD, which I put down to everything EXCEPT the SSD, because the symptoms didn't match it.

But as time has gone on, the BSODs became predictable, and now it seems I can't write anymore to it. The thing is, it is healthy 100%, no SMART errors, scans are fine etc. etc.

The only thing which is consistent is that when I get a BSOD and the system BSOD's on reboot too, doing an sfc /scannnow fixes it, but the scannow itself fails.

I've run scans, full surface scans etc. nothing has ever come up. The only other thing I can thing of is a corrupted OS install, but this is the 3rd one on the same SSD

    So yeah...any ideas ?

Maybe, if I had a few minidumps and an MSInfo32 report to work from

Re: My SSD is apparently perfect, so why is it BSOD'ing?!

Part of the problem maybe that the monitoring/diagnostics tools are really designed for magnetic hard drives, not SSDs - the idea of a surface scan for instance makes little sense on an SSD. Sad to say the only SSD failure I've had produced no symptoms whatsoever through the diagnostic tools of its impending doom, just one day failed to write (shortly followed by failed to read )

But satrow will sort you out with the software side of things.

Oh wow it's been a while since I had to do either of those. Making me realize how long it's been since I had to deal with a real computer problem. I'll force a BSOD in a bit (I gotta do some backing up, last few times it's happened it's took a while to get it working again, worried it might not come back to life) - thank you

Yeah everything I've read makes me think I got a dodgy SSD, but it's driving me mad not actually knowing. Acronis Drive Monitor & OCZ's own tools say there is nothing wrong - even the amount of spare blocks hasn't changed!

What make/model of SSD and have you ever updated the firmware?

The Kingston HyperX 3k I won off Hexus was plagued with horrendous BSOD problems;I updated the firmware and it's been rock solid for, what, 4 years since? So I'd definitely make checking for updated firmware a priority...

OCZ Octane 256gb (250gb ? Whatever they label em as nowadays). Firmware has never been flashed, but it's one of the first and last things I checked, the firmware hasn't been updated in the 3 years I've had it

Lucky you didn't buy a smaller model then

These SSDs were pretty bad, amongst the worst released, here's the returns stats from an EU etailer from 2013: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/893-7/ssd.html

Si on regarde les modèles avec un taux de retour supérieur à 5%, OCZ truste le classement :

    - 52,07% OCZ Octane SATA 2 128 Go
    - 45,26% OCZ Petrol 128 Go
    - 44,76% OCZ Octane SATA 2 64 Go
    - 40,57% OCZ Petrol 64 Go
    - 10,23% OCZ Agility 4 256 Go
    - 8,70% OCZ Octane SATA 3 256 Go
    - 7,41% OCZ Agility 4 64 Go
    - 6,85% OCZ Agility 4 128 Go
    - 6,59% OCZ Agility 3 90 Go
    - 5,56% OCZ Octane SATA 3 128 Go

Seriously, I wouldn't bother to try to fix it, I doubt if it's even possible. Get a new drive and get your data copied over is my advice. Latest version of the above article (there's a new one due around the end of this month): http://www.hardware.fr/articles/947-7/ssd.html

Bollocks. Yeah I've kinda known it's a bad drive, I just..wanted validation ha. Thanks for the info.

Also, I am too bloody poor! Did my back in a while ago, nobody will hire me, so my PC is dying bit by bit. A new SSD is right up there but tbh a graphics card comes first, the 2GB limit on my 670s is ruining gaming for me.

    Thanks again

It could also be your disk controller. You need to pull the drive and see if you can replicate it on another host. It's also worth trying different ports on your computer and a difference SATA cable.

Done that. intel 6gbit, intel 3gbit, and the...whatever make the other 6gbit ports are. Tried em all. With and without intel RST

It's OCZ.....there was a reason they went bankrupt and sold their IP to Toshiba.......

If your sure your on the latest firmware and have tried it on different controllers and a different SATA cable (I never saw a 'broken' SATA cable until SSDs became the norm), then it's time to invest in a new drive.....

    A) get new one
    B) keep old one for a month while you work out if you copied everything across
    C) format old one
    D) flash update the firmware
    E) use it for a games drive and see if you can trust it

Ha, that is BANG ON EXACT what I plan to do (minus the flash, it's already up to date).

At the end of the day it's still good for like 180gigs of storage so I won't throw it. GTA and Doom take up 120gigs just for those 2, so I'm not exactly going to be swimming in space.

I currently have a 5 drive RAID0 in this computer with 1 of the drives dying (for like 5 years, but the array was full when it started so I just...stopped writing to it, and it's been fine), and I'm seriously considering just taking out the bad drive, making it a 4 drive RAID0 and using that for games.

It's used for storage at the mo, I'm a digital hoarder but as I've gotten older I'm starting to realize how...dumb it is. I've honestly not watched anything on that drive in 3 years, it's a waste of resources.
