    What is the error code?

If you can write it down, Google it and see if there's anyone who's had a similar experience. If it's a common error, chances are you'll find a solution. If not, at least everyone here will have more information to work with.

Usually, when you get an error like that, the thing to do, is to install the same version of Windows in an 'upgrade installation'. This will basically replace the key files in C:\Windows\ and the system root etc, and 9 time out of 10, will let your friend go back into Windows like nothings happened.

He may need to redo a few settings, but all his files will be the same, his desktop untouched etc.

Now, if that doesn't work, what you need to do, is install Windows in a different directory on the same partition or on a different partition if available. That way, it'll let you boot into this 2nd windows, and back up any files he hasn't. You could go along with Windows running like that, but I have found it can be a bit buggy with 2 Windows on the same partition, as older programs can get a little confused.
