    broadband connection problem...

Im really hoping you guys can help me out here...

I've just bought a new computer and a new laptop, and I am unable to get my blueyonder broadband working on either of them.
It working fine in my old computer, however when connected to either of my 2 new ones, it just says acuiring network address. It connects for about 10-20 seconds, and then the connection dies.

    Any ideas please?

what OS are you using? I've had that problem with XP Pro, but never with 2k. Try uninstalling your firewall, I had probs with Zone Alarm on XP, but not on 2k. Networking never behaves as it should!

How is your pc gaining an IP address, have you fixed it or is it just set to obtain one from the DHCP server on your router?

Is it set to be in a different ip range?

Are you using wired or wireless?

If wireless is it in range?

Lots of question I could ask but basically they all boil down to the fact that we need more detail to help effectively.

iirc Blueyonder require the mac address for the NIC for it to work, (im assuming ur plugging straight into the back of the cable box) The reason ur old comp works is thats the MAC address they have.

Now im not 100% sure but i believe you can either

    1) got to a Blueyonder site, and reg new MAC addresses. (right click my network places, properties, right click on the connection, status, click on the support tab, and then finally the details, The bit that says physical address is ur mac address for the NIc on that particular machine)

    2) get a router, normally they can "steal" the mac address of ur current computer(the one that works), as far as Blue yonder is concerned nothing has changed.

    Hope that helps

    ^^ Exactly what he says.

You can go into selfcare and register your new MAC address, or get a router, clone your old Pc's MAC address (So the router uses that) and connect everything up to the router.

heers for the help guys, however this is what it now says on the blueyonder site:
    "
Good news! We've upgraded your service and as a result you no longer need to register your PC NIC Mac address. Just plug your equipment into your modem and reboot everything!
    "

I did a ipconfig /release as you mentioned above, and then tried it in the new computer again but still no joy. So I plugged it back into the old computer and then that one didn't work either lol.

So what I did was restore the new computer via sytem restor point, to before I downloaded the wondows updates, and now it seems to be working fine! Its a bit annoying though as it means I cant update windows so I'm getting loads of popups etc, dispite popup blockers. Also, I cant connect on my old pc now

Any more advice please? Will I need to buy a router?

long shot here....... but iirc winxp sp2 sets the xp firewall to on by default, try disabling the xp firewall and give that a go.

only other things i can think of are run the connection wizard see if that helps or check that the options in your browser are set correctly for for a direct connection to the internet.

I wonder if as a result of the removing the mac addresses they have gone to the format NTL use, if you plug a PC directly into the modem on your old PC and then take it out and plug it into another PC it will not aquire the IP address as the MAC address on your old system is registered with NTL as the connected PC.

i.e. this caught me out once, using my PC i plugged in a friends I had just formatted and downloaded the patches and when I reconnected mine it would not work. Reason? Well NTL tech support told me the MAC was assigned and I would have to wait 6 hours for it to expire and then I could re-plug in my machine.

So one night, remove you old PC from the modem, switch the modem off and when you get up plug the modem into your new PC, switch on and see if it connects.

Yep, definitely do that. Moved in with my gf temporarily and put my laptop on her NTL cable connection, which used to be on her bros computer. Setup the laptop and everything and still no dice, just got a little icon saying "acquiring network address" then it'd time out and give the old "little or no connectivity message". Just have the comp off, then unplug the modem, reboot it, when all the connectivity lights are solis then reboot your laptop. Should be fine.

Its a bit stupid really, how NTL do it, but its NTL...

Hope it all gets sorted, let us know if there are anymore probs

If you use a router, it works fine as the router is the aquired address

Purchase a simple router and you will have NO problems
