    New Build bootup issues

I am helping a family member put together a basic Ryzen apu system using a Kolink Sattelite plus M-ITX case. He has already RMA'd the first case thinking he had a faulty power button and got a replacement case in.

When I power up to test it works outside case on the box it came in via screw driver method, bios loads up and I see ram and cpu identified. Nothing else is connected at this stage. When I install it in the case and press power nothing happens. Only power button header connected to motherboard, definitely put the triangle symbol on +positive (or # as manual indicates) but nothing. Am I suppose to wait a few minutes? Also an atx-sfx adapter is used to fix it to case. The case has it's own cable you plug into PSU as it's placed at front of case.

Any ideas what it could be?

set it up outside the case but use the case connectors to see if the power button works

I did try that with just the power connector connected but nothing happened.

    Re: New Build bootup issues

The stand-offs align. Maybe I can replace them with different ones.

The only thing in the case is i/o sheild.
    sfx-atx adapter for sfx psu.
    am4 backplate.

    Re: New Build bootup issues

So the system boots both in and out of the case when you use a screwdriver to short the power switch pins on the motherboard?

Based on pictures/videos showing the Kolink Satellite Plus I would guess that...

power switch = orange & white
reset switch = purple and white
power LED = green & white
drive activity LED = red & white

If the power button is not working try using the reset button instead.

If you have a multimeter try testing the buttons. In continuity mode the multimeter should beep when you touch the 2 metal crimps on the connector while someone is pressing the button on the front of the case.

    Re: New Build bootup issues

I've only got it to boot outside the case with with cord into psu directly without sfx adapter. Inside case it hasn't. I'll try reset switch.

The case has its own cord that goes into psu, I plug into that at the rear.

    Re: New Build bootup issues

Using reset connector booted up pc. Thanks for that.

The only issue seems to be windows 10 not detecting realtek audio chipset. Installed AMD chipset driver 1st and it shows as 'AMD HD audio' in device manager under sound, although connected by hdmi cable it says DIGITAL AUDIO(S/PDIF).

    Re: New Build bootup issues

    AsRock Fatal1ty B450 itx motherboard.

Everytime I've tried installing Realtek audio drivers from motherboard website it doesn't complete before BSOD. So driver is incomplete or windows is not accepting it. However windows 10 has installed some generic AMD HD audio drivers. Great except I'm not getting sound. It says S/PDIF instead. Am going to uninstall AMD chipset drivers and start again and let windows 10 install something. See if that works out better for now.

Initially I did stick a gtx 1050 and connected monitor to that. But I didn't have ethernet connected whilst windows installed so it didn't fetch the drivers. When it did, it said they couldn't be installed. I tried to manually install nvidia also but it won't install. So back to APU for the time being.

    Re: New Build bootup issues

One issue which I am having and seems to common is freezing when idle. So if I leave pc alone for 10 minutes the screen freezes and requires hard reboot. If I am watching youtube, it randomly crashed. There is a power management issue going on here.

I would suggest re-seating the RAM modules and after that re-installing Windows from a 'freshly' downloaded/made USB stick off a computer that you know works.

You can also try running Windows Memory Diagnostic, however I would do the above even if it says nothing is wrong with RAM.

On the OS front, I downloaded windows10 1803 using media creation tool a few days ago. I noticed 1809 is now the one offered today. I know they had some issues last week with 1809 as well with users losing files.

Do you know if I can just roll back to a previous windows 10 even though I've never installed it on this machine.

Not tried that before and if I had to guess I would say no.

Loosing files is related to upgrading the existing Windows. You are installing a fresh Windows on a blank drive with no existing data on it or any other drive connected to the computer, right ?¿

Thanks Jon, it didn't occur to me that this would need to be done. Don't suppose you know under what menu audio setting might come under?. AsRock bios at times aren't the easiest to deal with. I'll have a look for it at home.

Depends on the bios but will be under advanced or something like that. If it's on auto, set it to enabled.
