Crucial MX100 reads but won't write

So here's a weird one. I've had a 512gb crucial MX100 (sata) as a 2nd drive with my games on for a couple of years. In the last few days sometimes hours after working fine, the drive will slow to a crawl. Further investigation had led me to see that I can still read from the drive as normal but I can't write to it. Rebooting does not solve the issue.

Neither Win10s built in diagnostics, crucial own tools nor CrystalDiscInfo can detect any issues with the drive and all its smart reporting comes up clear.

I've updated the firmware from v1 to V3 (latest,) but that has made no difference and Google isn't helping either.

Any thoughts or ideas? It's purely a drive full of game files so I'm happy to try solutions that may wipe the drive. Just hoping it isn't dying.

Not a Disk specialist by any measure but I find it hard to believe that a 512GB game drive has hit it's write limit in 4 years assuming you bought on launch and were writing its daily limit every day between now and then.

It sounds like the drive has died due to a MFR error, or, perhaps there's a SATA controller issue? Are your unning off of the CPU or a 3rd party controller?

Last solution, nuke it, and see what happens? Maybe try using another drive in the same port to rule out controller and/or port problems?

check if windows has reset the security permissions to another user, or reset them to read only.

I had that on one of my drives going from one windows install to another, all the folders set themselves to old user name.
guessing its that last October update to 10 jut been installed that's done it.. :shrug:

Thanks for the ideas. Sadly it wasn't windows write protecting, tried a different SATA port and cables and did a low level reformat. While that did work it still won't put anything new on the drive.

It's dead Jim. Hopefully a replacement at a much lower cost will be available in the January sales.

Reformat isn't the way, go for the Crucial Storage Executive program that comes with the drive and look for a drive wipe option. That will reset the firmware in the drive and force all flash blocks as free, if the drive firmware has gotten itself in a funny deadlock state then hopefully that will get it back to life and the firmware update you did may stop it from happening again.
